You don't know my kind.....You don't my mind.....Dark necessities are part of my design.....
Thanks to Simon as always and looking forward to catching up on another visit.
To all the comments on this book, thank you gentlemen. However this time all the praise is due to Jerome, for not only producing the most marvellous book, but also for his offer to be one of the fortunate people to have the opportunity to purchase. The images do not show the quality that has gone in to this, it is beautiful and has a tactile quality that is amazing, you just want to reach out and hold it, the feel of the leather is exquisite. So thank you Jerome, fantastic.
Nearly forgot, not drip pans Brian, not yet!!
Love it, Alec. Great rebound edition.
Thank you Antoni.
The way your collection is going we should start a "First Editions Signed" thread.
That are some amazing additions my friend - its always a great joy to see your collection topic poping up in the unread section.
Wish you all the best!
Many thanks Sebastian.
Thank you for the kind comments.
Hope the collecting is going well for you.
A.
Alec just sent me some photos of his latest acquisition. A change from the usual SK goodness, but a worthy addition to his library i'm sure you will agree.
The books came direct from Tolkien’s secretary who had worked for Allen and Unwin. I will let Alec share the details. All three books are signed by Tolkien!
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King
Wow!
Wanted: Human skin edition of The Book of the Dead. Will accept PC copy.
WHAT...

That is AMAZING!!!
Very impressive.
That very well might be the coolest snag to date. Amazing. Look at that signature, priceless.

Thank you Simon for posting the latest additions and our interesting conversation this morning.
As always many thanks for the positive comments from everyone, on some items that perhaps are a little off topic, however I thought they had some connection as it is all down to signatures.
The provenance of the three books is very close to Tolkien as the lady involved was employed by Allen and Unwin and then became his secretary. He gifted the set of books in its appropriate slipcase to her, with other valuable items. Another signed book and a map. She in turn gave the items to a baby boy to whom she had become godmother, to be looked after until he was at an age to appreciate them. During a period when the books had been removed from the slipcase, probably to be admired, they were not immediately replaced and the then young toddler proceeded to chew the one side of the case. Hence no slipcase, it was eaten!! I have been fortunate to be presented with a long letter from the previous owner, who was the child in the story and images of the lady with Tolkien, taken from his family album. I have not mentioned names as I think it inappropriate, however I prefer the story to the slipcase as I feel that is priceless. The slipcase is replaceable.
This is just brilliant... The story, the books, the editions, everything. Congratulations, Alec.
Absolutely breathtaking stuff, Alec. Congratulations!
Simply amazing! Congratulations!
Tolkien has a beautiful signature; the set looks quite remarkable. Thank you for allowing Simon to share it with us.
I dont knnow much about Tolkien collecting; whats the background of those editions?
