This is King's liberal, ersatz academic streak showing with its bias against profit. Given that there are millions of copies of his books available at stores and libraries it seems like a misplaced concern that a few high end editions are not read but collected.

It's called having the artwork 'tipped in'; it's a more sophisticated treatment which also allows for better reproduction of the artwork as it's usually printed on a higher quality paper that displays the artwork better.
Consider also that they could have easily just had the artwork printed on the same paper as the text blocks (at a lower quality reproduction) which would have been way less work, but someone's had to manually go through each of these books and paste them in.
Someone raised a good point - why not just print the artwork on the better paper separately and have it sewn in? That's a great idea, and for $4,500 I'd probably expect that if I had bought the book, but I don't really care.

By using tipped in art, they are able to control exactly where the images go. If you want the art to appear next to the text it's depicting, then you leave a blank page and paste in the image. Depending on how you fold and gather the signatures, you might only be able to bind/sew in a plate every 8 or 16 or 32 pages. I don't know anything about how this book was produced, but I imagine that the manual labor associated with pasting in these images is one of the "bells and whistles" Pete has mentioned.

I am not in the publishing business, but I was under the impression that each Carrie book would have a unique Remarque in the book. 26 unique remarks one for each book.
What I believe we received is an individual piece of art signed by Chadbourne. Am I misunderstanding the original sales pitch? did something change when designing the book? When other S/L and Lettered books have the remarques in the books, this one has a stand alone piece of art.
What am I missing?
