Ahh...i remember. Good question! Had we gotten there a few minutes earlier we may have gotten to sit down. We were standing there in the back. And i agree, not as mingle-friendly as i would have liked.

On Wednesday 11/7/2012 Justin Cronin did a reading, Q&A session and book signing for his new novel “The Twelve” at Books Etc. in San Francisco California.
My wife and I drove to the City and met TwistedNadine and her friend who had driven up from Los Angeles! We met in the North Beach area of SF at The Stinking Rose to get our garlic on.
After dinner (and drinks), we drove over to the bookstore. We were a bit early, so of course we stopped at Max’s Opera Café for (you guessed it) drinks.
Justin Cronin was a few minutes late. We were fortunate enough to be sitting in the front row. There were probably 4-5 dozen people in the audience. Justin read a chapter dealing with Bernard Kittridge and the "Last Stand in Denver".

Cronin discussed the missing chapter from the USA version-evidently it deals with masturbation. US publishers cringed, but UK publishers were delighted to have it. He also revealed the title of the third book-“City of Mirrors”. Apparently Cronin is so fond of the characters in the series that he is planning a fourth novel.

After the Q&A we queued up and had our books and promo items signed. I noticed that Cronin had a fine point pen, so I asked for my books to be signed with the fine pen instead of his normal sharpie. It makes for a nice change. He signed several firsts for me, some of the promo flyers and a poster.
While we were waiting in line, TwistedNadine was lamenting the fact that the bookstore had no hardback firsts of “The Passage” on hand. TN wanted one for her friend. A gentleman in line approached us and sold me a spare copy that he had brought with him. It was a very kind gesture and made TN and friend happy.
When all the books were signed, we had the chance for pictures with Cronin.
When the event concluded we returned to the bar next door (imagine that) and lo and behold Cronin and some acquaintances came in and sat right behind us. I had to restrain TN from approaching him and joining the dinner party
Feeling the night was still young; my wife (one drink only) drove us to Lombard Street-the “crookedest street in the world”. I have been there many times, but never at night and never actually walked the street-it is usually too full of cars for pedestrians to walk down the street itself.
We returned to North Beach and ended up at a true dive bar aptly named “Saloon”. The bar was featured in the movie “Twisted”. There was a live band and a very interesting crowd of people.
Sometime after midnight the wife and I headed home. TN and friend may still be there….
Thanks for the story and pictures, Jerome. Sounds like a nice time. Though, even if it was a bad time, I don't think you'd have known it with all the drinks you had.

Sounds like you all had a great time!

Oh man, I knew it would be awesome. Now I am even more bummed that I missed it.

Awesome post, RF! It sounds like you had a fine evening and thank you very much for the guided tour of SF.
P.S. Congrats on the multiple signatures and getting JC to sign with a different pen.
Good stuff Jerome. Looks like a great night!
Predictably I left my camera in the car during the signing but got a few shots on the drive up (the first one below is Alcatraz - sorry so blurry).
Great time, great people at the signing. Not only got the 1st Passage (thank you very much RF and nameless guest) but another guest gave me an event flyer since he had an extra and they were all gone (and I got it signed of course). Cronin is a good speaker and, tho some of the questions seemed irrelevant (imho) he answered all cordially. He mentioned he had done a LOT of hat tips and winks to other authors and also mentioned a future book idea that will include stories of other survivors (looking forward to that!). My Twelve was personalized, included "all eyes" and he used the fine tip pen (yahoo). RF, you and your wife are pretty fun to hang with. Sorry I ruffled your feathers by picking the flower at the Most Twisted Road. Another will grow back...

Crap Crap Crap Crap Crap............. Shit Shit Shit !!
Justin Cronin Oregon has been cancelled.
Damn it.

I asked him at the SF signing and he publicly didn't answer the question (actually said "not you again, next question"), but in queue he acknowledged that the book tour has worn him out. Logistically I can see how he HAS TO make the L.A. events, but dead heading back to Oregon afterwards and then flying to Miami never made sense.

I'm looking for a signed and dated copy of The Twelve. I received the book I ordered from VJ Books and the spine has a bit of a lean to it. He used those dreadful Priority envelopes and wrapped the book in bubblewrap too tightly, putting too much pressure on the spine.
