Just another day at the office... hard hat swagger, 90 m below the surface at the ATLAS detector of the Large Hadron Collider (CERN, Switzerland). This is where the Higgs boson was detected for the first time. Sheldon Cooper, eat your heart out!
Agree. Very cool photo, Michael!
Thanks guys! I like this photo too (even though I look very sleepy - they were two very long days!). Also, it was very hard to get a decent pic showing the sheer size of that thing in such a crowded space (the part you see is the 'end cap' of the detector and has a diameter of ~27 meters (close to 90 feet). But I like they way it turned out. Since you guys liked it, I'll post a few more.
The LHC is a circular tunnel with a length of 27 km, 90 m below the surface. When they're doing an experiment, two particle beams travel through it at near the speed of light, in opposite directions. There are four places where the beams intersect - this is where the collisions occur that produce all these exotic particles, and this is where the four detectors are located. ATLAS, pictured above, is one of those places. Here is a pic of the above-ground structure. They managed to create something cool out of an otherwise drab building.
This was at LHCb, one of the other experimentation sites. A Dutch professor working there explained us how to hit a particle with your elbow to produce B mesons that decay into muon-antimuon pairs (just kidding about the elbow part). This was measured with the LHCb detector shown in the second picture. Again, hard to get a feel for its size from this pic (and this is only a tiny portion of it).
Awesome Michaël, looks like an amazing experience.
And you didn't get sucked into a black hole, bonus!

That is sooooo cool Michael! Thank you for sharing those pictures and the story.
I hope you guys don't mind but here I am again, posting pics in this thread. A few teaser pics from my wedding:
I'll probably post a few more when we get everything from the photographer we hired. I've seen a couple of others already and they are truly wonderful!
PS In case anyone is wondering: I'm about 1.80 m (5'11"?) and Annette is wearing 3 inch heels, making her almost exactly my height in the pics
Beautiful! (And I mean both the lady AND the pictures!) Congratulations!
John
Sweet Michaël, you both look so happy. Looking forward to seeing some more.
Yes, John is right very beautiful, and you don't scrub up bad yourself.
Yep. What John said! Congratulations to you both.
Great pictures, Michaël! Congrats!!
Great pictures, can't wait to see more.
So glad you both had a great day!
Those pictures, and the girl, are gorgeous!
Congratulations Michael!
