That's nothing to worry about...it's perfectly normal and usually required to allow bigger books to open without creasing the spine

Question: whats the difference in terms of endpapers(color), boards(color) etc...between the first edition/first printing of CARRIE and later editions?

Not to be snotty, but most Collector's do not have later editions in their collection.
    According to the Dt.org wiki:
Read here: the true first has "Maroon boards with black pastedowns."
Any other thing will not be a 1st edition-and there are likely many different endpaper, board color combinations after the fact.

I assumed that someone here would know the difference.

Well, I just got a signed first/first. Not in great condition(ex-library), but cant complain about the price I was fortunate to grab it at. I was thinking about getting it repaired. .

Mine's a later printing (based on the dust jacket price) with white end-pages and the maroon cloth cover. It's acting as a placemarker for the day I can get a 1st/1st. Can I still be a Collector???

In regards to the British first editions of King's first five titles. I have seen print runs listed as less than a 1,000 copies fo Carrie, Night Shift, and The Stand. Does anyone have more specific numbers for these titles, or any ideas as to the print runs fo Salem's Lot and The Shining?

    Ken,

I've heard that the print runs for Carrie, Night Shift and the Stand as anywhere between 400 and 1000 copies. I would suggest that The Stand and Night Shift were closer to the 400 mark and Carrie around the 1000 mark. Salem's Lot and The Shining I don't know but I would expect them to be higher than the other three judging by how common they are - particularly The Shining.

By the way, I'm always looking for UK first editions of the those three if ever anyone has any copies for sale (not ex-lib or reprints though).

Alan has stated in the past that the early UK trade editions were printed in batches of 500 copies. So Carrie and Night Shift may have had a print run of 500. I personally think the print run for The Stand may have been 1,000 rather than 500 - I used to own three copies myself and although it's not super common to see copies for sale, they are definitely easier to find than Carrie and Night Shift (although Carrie isn't hard to find per se, it's just terribly expensive!).

I'm still sad that I sold my UK Carrie, The Stand, Night Shift, Dead Zone and Danse Macabre... I decided to quit collecting UK editions and I'm still okay with that decision.... but I should at least have kept The Big Ones!

So would it be a good guess that the print runs on Salem's Lot and The Shining are still pretty low say in the 1,500 to 2,500 range?

If my name was Sheryl, I might buy it. If it was the US version, I might buy it. IMO, the UK version is worth less than the US version.
I think this particular book is worth ~$200.

You can find them if you are persistent. Nice, unread copies are harder to find, of course.

I don't know any galleries for UK paperback editions - I usually check Steve's (ur2ndbiggestfan's) collection thread. They're all in there.

Thanks, Michaël! I was looking through collections last night, but I hadn't gotten to that one yet.
