Spoiler:
I just read the casting news on another site and thought, "Who the hell is Tirana?"
A NEW GAME BEGINS
I don't know that they're that clever. I do think that Hollywood is stupid enough to think it would be a great idea to make Susannah white because Roland is now black. And I'm sure she'll have legs, as well.
I could see her being the Allie character, but I would assume they are cutting out Tull for expediency. Are they still going to follow the whole 7 novels, 7 movies thing, or try to condense some of it to make fewer movies?
Although Tirana sounds like a villain name.
The more news come from this, the more worried I get. They seem to want to ruin the damn thing and not taking it seriously. I don't understand why King allows this. Is he pleasing them just out of kindness? Idris Elba as Roland and now this? Oh my, this is not good at all! Hollywood sucks, that's obvious!
OK I'm a little bit behind the loop ... but who the fuck is Tirana!? lol
I mean I get that if they're trying to do The Gunslinger as a standalone movie, besides atmosphere and world building, there's not much plot there ... but Tirana ... really?
I thought this was a pretty good read on the whole Tirana announcement... The Dark Tower Finds Its Female Lead, But Who Is This Character?
I believe I've read King thinks a poor adaption doesn't tarnish the book so has generally let film makers do their own thing. I hope he has some create input here and sets some boundaries though :/ This article highly suggests the intention is to turn The Dark Tower into a franchise, so I really really really hope they do it well.

Michael Whelan & DT Original Art
Why has Sai King just handed is "baby" over to Sony to be used and adused?
Half his life he walked with Roland (and in the "drawing of the three)
Discribes him as looking like Mr Eastwood!! Elba ,although a good actor,
Is not Roland! I fear it will be so far from the books that I won't want to watch the film!
Racial discrimination and profiling were a major corner stone in this novel (world)
And being erased!!! I still think Sean Bean would be a better choice.
Long days and pleasant nights!
Let's follow the clues re: Tirana:
- sexy and dangerous
- important to the story (or, at least, not a bit player)
- shows up early enough in the story to be cast now
- fake human appearance
The only character I can think of that could meet those requirements would be the Oracle? I can see this actor playing a succubus. It would be pretty good casting, actually. If they combined her with some other parts (Mia, maybe?) then she could show up in later films as well and it would be a big enough role to warrant this kind of attention.
The fake human with snake eyes and the name all point to a can toi, but I can't see them casting that far into the novels already (and I can't see why a hot young actor coming off a big success would agree to play such a bit role). The name has to be a placeholder for now.
First he's Clint Eastwood, then he's Stephen King.
First he's "long, tall, and ugly", then he's ruggedly handsome.
First he's rail thin, then he's as muscular as the plot requires.
As much as I like the character, his physicality outside of his icy blue eyes is somewhat inconsistent.
I'm not sure about the credibility of this source, but it should provide interesting fodder for discussion, to say the least!

Casting can sometimes be misleading -- when Rhea Seehorn auditioned for Better Call Saul, they gave her a script about a cop who has to arrest her sister for selling drugs!
Author of The Road to the Dark Tower, Stephen King: A Complete Exploration of His Work, Life, and Influences and The Dark Tower Companion. Co-editor with Stephen King of the anthology Flight or Fright.
Interesting because it backs up a bit of info that the anonymous reddit user posted.
Casting for the role of Jack [sic].
"One day you're going to figure out that everything they taught you was a lie."
This is what I was talking about. It was posted a page or two back. I thought it sounded ridiculous at first but it actually totally slides in with what that casting call page has. It's making me very worried.

So Roland's name is now Draven?“This boy has had a hard time adjusting to the death of his father, a 9/11 first responder who died of toxic exposure. Now living with his worn-down mother and a stepfather who dislikes him, Jack is prone to vivid nightmares of other worlds and apocalyptic destruction, dreams that have landed him in the care of a shrink. About to be shipped off to a psychiatric facility, Jack realizes that his “escorts” are actually inhuman creatures bent on his abduction. Fleeing their clutches, Jack escapes into another world – where he soon realizes that his “insane” nightmares were actually visions of an impending apocalypse that will destroy not only Earth, but all worlds in the wider multi-verse. Possessed of powers beyond his imagining, Jack must now fullfill his destiny of saving the universe, and to that end, he teams with rogue Draven, a reluctant hero whose thirst for vengeance may derail them from the task at hand. But Jack has reserves of strength, tenacity, resourcefulness and raw courage that make him a formidable force against the powers of darkness.”
Oh boy this gets worse and worse.
I'm willing to bet they just changed the names and the title around (notice how it's called "Diamond City") in an attempt to minimize leaks.

The more that I think about Elba as Roland, the more I'm fine with it. No, he doesn't look anything like what King describes in the novel, but that doesn't matter in the least. Roland's ethnicity means almost nothing in the grand scheme of the story. The only time it's even mentioned is in connection with Detta, but they can just handwave that as Detta thinks that Roland is a "race traitor" who betrayed her own kind. But other than that, Roland's skin color is irrelevant. Personally, I'd take acting talent over looking like the description of the fictional character any day, and Elba is a tremendously gifted actor. And King seems more than fine with his casting.
If Elba's not your ideal Roland, that's fine. It shouldn't change your attitude towards the novels or what you envision Roland to look like. Personally, I'd championed Guy Pearce ever since I saw "The Proposition", but Elba's got enough old-school gravitas that I think he'd do very well, provided the script is up to snuff. That is what we should be worrying over; Akiva Goldsman does not inspire confidence in me, Academy Award or no.
As for Abbey Lee's casting, I doubt that she's a replacement for Susannah. She sounds like Allie more than anything else, only with a different (more fantastical?) name. Or perhaps she's a wholly original character. In any case, I quite liked Lee in "Mad Max: Fury Road," so I'm fine with her casting.
"I aim to misbehave."

"I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar."
-- Hoban Washburne
"What does that make us?"
"Big damn heroes, sir."
"Ain't we just."
-- Malcolm Reynolds and Zoe Washburne
It will be, what it will be. I'm game to see what they have in store.

Call me cynical, but in my 44 years on this earth, one thing has born true. Rarely are movie adaptations any good. When they start making wholesale changes like this, it usually turns out bad. I have yet to experience a movie adaptation that turned out better than I expected. Next thing they're going to do is get rid of the guns because it's too violent.
I'm going back to not caring.
