I don't think I have either. But I have seen a second state (price clipped and repriced with Father "Cody" error) dust jacket on a later printing book. I presume it was the second printing of the book; it had the date 1975 on the title page and was inscribed by King in December 1975 but it lacked the "First edition" statement on the copyright page. I don't recall what the date code was in the back.

Funny story about that book. In 1998 I was in Bangor for the Bag of Bones signing at Betts Bookstore. Stu Tinker told the local TV station that "the four biggest Stephen King collectors in the world" would be together for the first and likely only time. I really doubt that we were the four biggest collectors in the world but it made for a good story and the station sent a reporter and cameraman to interview us all together. It was me, Charlie Fried, Chris Cavalier and Marc Brenner.

Anyway, at some point I wandered further down Main Street and went into Lippincott Books. This was another independent bookstore (now closed) run by Bill Lippincott. They also did some good business with King books and lots of locals would bring their King signed books to either Betts or Lippincott. I saw this copy of 'Salem's Lot on the shelf, picked it up, saw that it was inscribed by King in 12/75 and had a second state dj and immediately took it to the cashier. It was $200, IIRC. I thought I had made the buy of the century; a first edition 'Salem's with a nice inscription. I took it back down the street to Betts and started to show it to Stu. He knew the book and said in that Maine drawl of his "It's naaaaht a fuuuust edition." I looked at the copyright page and, sure enough, the first edition statement was missing. I thought to myself "Great. Here I am being called one of the biggest King collectors in the world and it seems I can't even tell what is a first edition and what isn't." It didn't help that the bookstore was packed with other King fans. Embarrassed I took the book back to Lippincott and asked to return it.

In retrospect I should have kept it. One of the high end booksellers (maybe Ken Lopez or Peter Stern) eventually ended up with it and was offering it in one of their catalogs a few years later for $3000. I guess it sold because I can't find it online anymore. I'm still embarrassed by that even today.

Thanks for your answers. It seems 3rd state is less than 2nd state, but they also show up on 2nd printing of the novel.

Bob, that truly is a double whammy. Embarrassed you bought it, and embarrassed you sold it.

I haven't always made the best decisions. My wife will attest to that.

The first and second printings of the book were 4 weeks apart and if the Q is for 1975 and the numbers 37 and 41 are for the weeks in the year. Then both printings were prior to publication, so the dust jackets being a mix of second and third state dust jackets on the 27,500 combined copies of first and second print books would make sense. Unless I am wrong on how the date codes work.

Don't get too fixed up on 1st vs 2nd printings etc. You can mix-and-match different dustjackets with different editions,

    Doubleday gutter code theory

    Doubleday Gutter code theory:
Hypothesis- The letter in the Doubleday gutter code indicates the year the book was PRINTED. The number is the week of the year the printing was done.
Keep in mind a book could be printed during the last several weeks of a calendar year but not be released until several weeks later and thus be released in a different year than the printing occurred.
(This is for 1st edition 1st printings)
Carrie-------- Released in 1974. P6 gutter code 4=P. Printed the 6th week of 1974.
    'Salem's Lot-Released in 1975. Q37 gutter code 5=Q Printed the 37th week of 1975.
The Shining RELEASED in 1977. Gutter code R49. 6=R Printed the 49th week of 1976.
Night Shift RELEASED in 1978. Gutter code S52. 7=S Printed the 52nd week of 1977.
The Stand released 1978. Gutter code T39. 8=T Printed the 39th week of 1978.
Pet Semetary released 1983. Gutter code Y38 3=Y Printed the 38th week of 1983.
