On this site, the book comments are not enough to ensure the book is first edition. Many source sites as well as this one, mostly use the dust cover to identify the book as first edition. If someone has a first edition book with a good dust jacket, but the book is defect in some way... They could put the jacket on a BCE and past it off as a first edition. For example, if you were to purchase one these books, it would meet all the first edition attributes listed here. I have both books and the only difference I can find is the way the library cataloguing information is presented. The best way to provide the best information possible is to show the CP page for a first edition. Just my thoughts..

Are you saying that there are BCE's that are "Quarter bound in black cloth with tan boards and white pastedowns, AND the Copyright page states: “First published in 1981 by The Viking Press.”
BTW, this is a wiki. Members can upload images....

A lot of the book club editions are identical to the 1st publications, and only the DJ is the distinguishing factor. It totally depends on the edition. The boards on many of the early 1st editions are substantially different from the book club editions, by color and materials, but nowadays, the 1st edition is identical to the book club. (apart from the DJ).

(Can I just say that it REALLY bugs me to write color instead of colour.)

Randall..That is correct.. I have a BCE that is identical to the first edition in every way (Book not DJ), except for the Library of Congress Catalog Card information in the CP. I think that pictures of the CP would be a great addition to the catalog..

I edited the wording a bit, and added an image of the CR page.

Here are my original Cujo 1st pics from 1981 (pretty sure the book came out in September hence the code 0981 on the inside flap):

It's possible the book club editions use cheaper paper and maybe the book weighs less. Has anyone compared to two weights to see if they're identical?
