Comments:
Stephen King's first Signed Limited book, The "asbestos bound" Lettered state is considered to be the scarcest SK collectible. This being King's first limited edition, he was unaware of tradition and dated the limitation pages over a four-day period starting July 5th.

There has been some questions and discussion regarding whether or not Stephen King "ordered" that the book be bound in asbestos.
According to The Fine Books Company: THE CORRECT ORIGIN OF THE ASBESTOS FIRESTARTER
When my friend Alex Berman told me he had a contract to produce a signed limited edition of FIRESTARTER by Stephen King, I was very happy for him. When he told me of doing something special, such as an even more prominent lettered edition, I thought that to be a fun idea. Upon viewing some advance matter for the book (from Viking if I recall correctly), specifically the page which quotes from Ray Bradbury's FAHRENHEIT 451 "It was a pleasure to burn....," I suggested to Alex that now might be the time to produce the second genre book bound in asbestos. As you all know, he did.

To those who surmised that the statement "In 1980, Stephen King ordered a limited number of copies of his novel FIRESTARTER bound in asbestos as a tribute to this particular release of FAHRENHEIT 451" was false, congratulate yourself. It was.....!!! As a matter of fact, I pointed this out to the good people at Heritage Auctions before their sale. Surprise......!!! They ignored it.
