Educated by some of Gilead’s finest tutors himself, Vannay spent a great deal of time traveling abroad studying under various philosophers and often surpassing their knowledge.

Vannay was responsible for the gunslingers’ mental training, and believed fighting sometimes caused more problems than it resolved.

Vannay is responsible for giving Roland the nickname Gabby, on account of the boy’s tendency to be so quiet.

Vannay also had a son, Wallace, who died of the falling sickness.
