I have a $8.95 t-42 printing, that would around the time The Stand was printed, 2yrs later. What printing could that be?

So, I am trying to figure to figure this out. I always assumed that they did a few of the 1st dust jackets then realized it was too expensive and got rid of them. They were on first ed books. Then the still had at least 20,000 books left. I thought that they then put the second state dust jacket on first edition books. If they had to run 7500 more books with the corrected jacket, does that mean that technically. they are not first printing and are second printing? Would my book (third state) say first ed? If it does, then that means that they considered the extra books part of the first ed run. But it would also mean that they may be more rare correct? I know money wise, the second command the premium. I am just trying to understand this. So even though it's a "second" printing, it's more rare then then the "first" printing?
The books that state "First Edition"on the copyright page and Q37 for the gutter code are first edition and first printing. Any other gutter code, or no "First Edition" on the copyright page, would be a later printing.
The dustjackets come in two states exclusive to the first printing and a third state that could appear on either the first printing or the second.
"One day you're going to figure out that everything they taught you was a lie."
I am pretty sure mine says First Edition and had Q37 on the gutter page. So that would make it a true first edition, even with a third state dust jacket right? So are there only "7500" dust jackets that are third state out of the, what seems like 27,500 first ed? That would mean that 20,000 would be second state? And even though there are less second state, it's worth more because it came out as an earlier printing? In my case I have
1 out of 7500 copies. Is that what is being said here?
Well yoi have to remember the 3rd state jacket didnt just go on the 1st editions it was also on the 2nd and probably 3rd printings. Meaning someone could take a 3rd state jacket from a later edition and put it on a 1st edition. The 2nd state is more expensive and rare in my opinion becuase it was the one meant for the 1st edition book.
Now that makes sense. I bought this from Stu way back. So I would hope that it's not just 3rd state from a later edition on a first ed book. But whatever. It still helped to complete my collection. Maybe someday I will also get a 2nd state as well. Thanks for that info.
I've been at odds with the states of dust jackets. My understanding of states is an error or addition printing. Example Red October(Clancy) 6 reviews on back 1st, 8 later 2d, Pet Sematary, wife's book published 82/83, Hemingway ...Bells Toll, photographer name missing then added later 2nd, 1984 2 different color jackets (blue/red) Exorcist photo with coffee cup, then different photo, Eragon one review 1st, more added later. I just listed a few. What I'm having trouble with is Salems' Lot, clipping the price on 'Cody' jacket does not make it second state (same print) but correcting to 'Callihan' makes that copy a 2nd state. I think over the years we been made to think that there are 3 states. Let me know what you think
It's not just clipping the jacket, it's clipping the jacket by the publisher AND reprinting a new price on it because there was a price deemed too high. There are 1st state jackets out there ($8.95 on the jacket non-clipped with no $7.95) and one or two forum members here have one. There are only a handful known to exist since they were retrieved by a doubleday employee after the 2nd state was made. If there were no $8.95 jackets out there I would agree with you and say that there really is no first state since it never really made it out but since there are some in the hands of collectors I would consider it a first state. Oh and welcome to the boards!
Thanks for your reply. I see your point, if they had used the same print plates and reprinted $7.95 on a full corner still with 'Cody' that would be 2nd state (I know to save money the just repriced the 'original' jacket) 'Callahan' would become a 3rd state. I have both books with (Cody/Callahan) $7.95 jackets, I know I will never find an unauthorized $8.95 'cody'. You might think I'm nitpicking on this issue, but this is how I've felt about this for 40 years, and brought this up with other book collectors/dealers and did agree with this idea.
