    Default New King in McSweeney's?

    This just in my inbox from McSweeney's

    Issue 33 of McSweeney's is a one-time-only, Sunday-edition-sized newspaper. We are calling it the San Francisco Panorama, and it may well be the biggest project we have ever undertaken: there is, besides a ninety-six page broadsheet dedicated to the news of the day and of the Bay,

    • a sixteen-page, full-color, 15" x 22" comics section with work from Dan Clowes, Chris Ware, and Art Spiegelman;
    • extraordinary reportage from William T. Vollmann and Nicholson Baker;
    • a 100+ page magazine featuring essays from Antarctica and Israel and Andrew Sean Greer at a NASCAR race;
    • a 100+ page book review with new fiction by George Saunders and Roddy Doyle, James Franco interviewing Miranda July, and Joshuah Bearman on romance-novel cover models;
    • China Miéville reviewing The Road and Stephen King watching the world series;
    • and also possibly, seriously, the best food section that has ever appeared in any newspaper anywhere, with an incredible modular ramen recipe from New York's own David Chang and a fifty-eight-step lamb-belly photo essay from San Francisco's Ryan Farr.

    We have been working nonstop on this one since the spring, and we couldn't be more excited about every ounce of it—but as ever, this thing depends on the commitment of our readers, so if any of this sounds like something you'd like to see on your doorstep, sign up for it today.

    Not sure exactly what that means...

    Sounds like a non-fiction baseball piece perhaps.

    Editor's note: The following is excerpted from San Francisco Panorama, the forthcoming one-time-only Sunday newspaper to be published on Dec. 8 by McSweeney's, the publishing house founded by writer Dave Eggers. Author Stephen King was assigned to cover the 2009 World Series from a front-row seat ... in his own living room, off the TV set. Want to know who won the Series? Want to know if King's still venting about the New York Yankees? Check out San Francisco Panorama on Dec. 8.

    It looks like a bookstore near me (35 miles away) will have issue #33 on Tuesday 12/08.
    Their price should be $5 +tax. Cheaper than the $16 at the McSweeney's website.

    I don't know of any bookstores near me that will have it. I'll have to order online.

    What a PITA. I had spoken with the specialty bookstores in Berkeley (bizerkly). They indicated the issue would be readily available and @ the $5 price. It turns out that the only real place to get one for $5 was at the publishers address on Valencia in San Francisco, and purportedly from 'Street Hawkers" .
    From their website:
    *BAY AREA FOLKS: The Panorama will be available locally through hawkers on the street for $5 on December 8th.
    Actual price is $16+tax.
    Well there were no 'hawkers' in Berkeley. Only some bizarre bookstores. I'm too tired tonight to tell the long story-tomorrow perhaps.

    It is truly like a 'Sunday Times' Remarkable in size, no ads which really means it is gigantic, and the Stephen King sports journal is a fold-out that is stunning.

    Teaser pics...note the ruler, books for scale.

    Well, I'd like to hear the whole story when you are in the mood to tell it.

    I guess I'll order a copy through McSweeney's website. I'm glad ol' Uncle Stevie got to watch the Yankees win the World Series and I'll be interested to read his take on it. I wonder if it will be objective or full of sour grapes?

    I had checked on the McSweeney's website and they listed The Panorama as being available online for $16. They had an asterisk that said
    *BAY AREA FOLKS: The Panorama will be available locally through hawkers on the street for $5 on December 8th. It will also be available through local bookstores that day, and in perpetuity.
    Now I take Bay Area to mean the San Francisco Bay Area. Several weeks ago I e-mailed McSweeney's and inquired which retailers would have the issue for $5. I never received a response.
    I call Pegasus books in Berkeley. The man who answered said they would have them Tuesday 12/08/09 at all three of their stores. Since I was going to be in the Berkeley area that day I figured I would grab a couple issues for $5. When I called yesterday morning while on the way, to confirm they received them, the guy said they just came in, and will be sold out within an hour. I was a little surprised. He said 1st come 1st serve. I fight cross town traffic (right by University of California so people, bikes and cars are everywhere) I felt like I was in New Delhi. I arrive at the store and the man says "limit one". I am less than pleased and tell him I drove over 30 miles-he doesn't care, "limit one". Ok, whatever I proceed to pay, pulling out $6, and he says "$17.48"
    I mention they were slated to be $5 locally.
    It appears McSweeney's changed their plans and only sold the papers via street "Hawkers" in San Francisco only, and just for a brief period. More of a publicity stunt than anything else. The lady behind me offers to buy one for me-the clerk gets all pissy and says now that he heard her say it, he doesn't feel that it would be right.
    Whatever!
    I take my purchase (thank the lady for her kindness) and leave. I stop at the pub I frequent in Oakland to have a pint. An hour later I get a call from Pendragon Books in Oakland (part of the Pegasus group, but run by different staff). The nice lady informs me the three copies I asked for are there waiting for me. I walk the 2 blocks to the store and buy the three copies. I asked her why no limit, and she said they had requests for 12, but received 24, so she saw no need for limits.
    I basically chock it up to the fact two stores are in Berkeley and one in Oakland. The Berkeley staff are simply more 'militant'.

    Oh well. At least I got a story to tell from the ordeal.
    The thing is huge, and from what I can tell has no ads, so it really has a substantial amount of content.

    Wow, Jerome, what a pain. I'm glad that you got a few copies eventually, and also that you got to go hit your favorite local pub in the area. I trust it is the one where we have quaffed a few pints together?

    Death and Taxes

    Green Flash West Coast IPA

    West Coast I.P.A.
    This West Coast-Style India Pale Ale is extravagantly hopped, full flavored, medium bodied and copper colored. A menagerie of hops is combined throughout the brewing process to impart specific characteristics. Hops used include Simcoe for a unique fruitiness and grapefruit zest, Columbus for strong hop pungency, Centennial for pine and citrus notes, and Cascade for floral aroma.

    If need be I can send you one. I have 5 copies, all of which in newspaper quality are in great shape.
    Otherwise the website will work.
    I will be interested to see how web orders are shipped, and how pristine they arrive.

    I ordered one yesterday for $16. Then I was charged over $13 for Priority Mail shipping. Ouch! I'll let you know how it goes. I've had some rotten luck lately with poor packaging/handling. My luck is due for a change.

    Those beers sound great, not sure if we get them on the east coast. There's so many great beers out there now.

    Mine arrived today. EXTREMELY well-packed and in perfect condition. A nice change of pace from the Waterstone's fiasco.

    I enjoyed King's piece on the World Series. It was longer than I expected. But, as I expected, it was less than objective. King can't get over his puerile hatred of all things New York, especially the Yankees. Oh well, let him stew in his misery over the off season. Ha!

    He's no different from a lot of other fans really.

    I worked with a guy who took a week's vacation to go see the Carolina Panther's Spring Training. I'm not a football fan (or any other sport really, though MMA is starting to take some interest) so I don't see the allure of watching Spring Training. While he was there, he had the opportunity to visit with a female friend who was romantically interested in him (he wasn't married or otherwise attached). He decided that rather than spend even one evening with her, he would rather spend all five days watching a bunch of grown sweaty guys running around practicing. Not playing a game, just running patterns and basically knocking the rust off and getting their bodies back to doing what they do for a lving.

    That would not have been me sitting there at Spring Training, but I'm not a rabid fan either. Of course, I would have understood his devotion if he had only the one day, but he had ALL WEEK. But that's just me I guess.
    Margaret Emmie Mackey Catoe, you are, have been, and always will be my soulmate, and I love you.
