There have been several movies I thought should be seconded, but I hadn't seen so didn't feel comfortable seconding them, was going to ask a couple of days ago about other peoples thoughts on that.
There's also several films I remember seeing in the theater as a kid, and liking, but have very little recollection of the movie. Still debating on if I should nominate them. I might just list them as suggestions for other people to nominate.
Wanted:
'Salem's Lot Portfolio #606
Fairy Tale UK S/L
I would like to second:
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot
I was born in 68 and I am surprised at how many movies I thought of as 70's movies were from the 60s such as The Guns of Navarone and I was amazed that The Bridge Over The River Kwai was the late 50's.
All that's left of what we were is what we have become.
I second The Rescuers.
I nominate Sergio Leone’s Duck, You Sucker! (aka A Fistfull of Dynamite) (1971)
Watch trailer:
Mirror (1975)
Andrei Tarkovsky
Watch trailer:
I'll second McCabe & Mrs. Miller.
An early Pacino film here:
The Panic in Needle Park
Release Date: 1971
Director: Jerry Schatzberg

I'm the exact same way. I was born in 77 so I have absolutely no memory of the actual 70's. The 80's and 90's were my favorite decades for many things. I really struggled coming up with movies for this tournament and I think my participation will drop in this one vs. the previous ones. It will just keep going down as the decades get older as well. I just don't have a whole lot of interest in watching movies older than I am.
That may have been me. There are a ton of titles that have been nominated that I don't recognize at all or only know of because they made some sort of sequel or reboot later on. I went through the list and here's the ones that I noticed so far. There are probably others as well.
The Exorcist (1973), dir. William Friedkin
The Bad News Bears (1976), dir. Michael Ritchie
The Omen (1976), dir. Richard Donner
Halloween (1978), dir. John Carpenter
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), dir. Tobe Hooper
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971), dir. Mel Stuart
House (1977), dir. Nobuhiko Obayashi
Catch-22 (1970), dir. Mike Nichols
Carrie (1976), dir. Brian De Palma
Dawn of the Dead (1978), dir. George A. Romero
The Amityville Horror (1979), dir. Stuart Rosenberg
Mad Max (1979), dir. George Miller
Superman (1978), dir. Richard Donner
Shaft (1971), dir. Gordon Parks
King Kong (1976), dir. John Guillermin
Black Christmas (1974), dir. Bob Clark
A Star is Born (1976), dir. Frank Pierson
The Last House on the Left (1972), dir. Wes Craven
I Spit on Your Grave (1978), dir. Meir Zarchi
The Hills Have Eyes (1977), dir. Wes Craven
Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), dir. Don Taylor
Pete's Dragon (1977), dir. Don Chaffey
Charlotte's Web (1973), dir. Charles A. Nichols and Iwao Takamoto
The Wicker Man (1973), dir. Robin Hardy
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974), dir. Joseph Sargent
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?
I can't really explain it. Maybe because some of my favorite movies are the ones that make me feel nostalgic. Either because I remember watching them when I was younger or they simply remind me of the good times I had when I was younger. There's only a few movies from the 70's that do that for me and AFAIK, nothing from before that. Although I don't think any of them will make my favorite list.
I'm also not a big movie buff. I don't typically seek out movies I haven't seen just to say that I've seen them or in the off chance that I might enjoy them. If I haven't seen them by this point in my life, I probably never will.
One good example for this is THX-1138. I actually sat down and watched that about a month ago because I just happened to catch it on TV. I had heard about it for years but didn't really know what to expect and never really had an urge to watch it before. I was not really that impressed.
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?
And I'm like the complete opposite. I remember watching so many older movies growing up. When I got a little older and we had cable, I would watch as much as I could, especially the premium channels and TCM and AMC and IFC. In high school I even took Film Studies as an elective, I think when I was a sophomore or junior. It was awesome. Then I discovered The Criterion Collection. So I've always been fascinated by older classics, just as much as the new releases. I hope as this tournament goes on, you might check out some of the nominations that seem interesting. Lots of them are available on streaming.
I have seen about 60 of these films.

Chantal Akerman

I think I fall more in Iwritecode's camp. I haven't felt motivated to watch movies from previous tournaments, unless something about it grabbed my attention. I think for me the rationale is that there are just so many movies/tv shows to watch, too many books to read, too many games to play, and too many CD's to listen to, that you just have to limit yourself, and watching something just because someone recommended it doesn't seem appealing to me (unless that person is very close to me and knows exactly what I like).
Having said that, due to nostalgia (I was born in '68), I may try to watch more movies from this tournament then others. I have found myself in the mood to watch more thrillers and more mysteries lately. (thanks to watching a box set of Hitchcock movies, and Knives Out)
Wanted:
'Salem's Lot Portfolio #606
Fairy Tale UK S/L
Since we are getting close to the end, thought I would mention a few movies I remember seeing, and liking, but since it has been over 40 years, don't remember enough about them to nominate them, but would second them if someone else nominated them.
The Apple Dumpling Gang - 1975
The Apple Dumpling Gang rides again - 1979
Hot Lead, cold feet - 1978
Wanted:
'Salem's Lot Portfolio #606
Fairy Tale UK S/L
The '70s were full of thrillers. We've got some great ones here. I think I may have one or two more to nominate.
I'll second Benji.
