Default Choose Your Own Adventure: The Abandoned Prison

I saw this in a very old thread HERE. It looked like people had fun with it then, so let's try it again.

I'll start a story and then give some choices. Then someone else picks a choice and writes what happens. They give 2 or more choices for someone else to get creative with. And it goes on.

You can have a choice lead to an ending, just finish with The End. Then the next writer just goes to the previous choice and uses the unused one to carry on.

    The Abandoned Prison

    1.
You and your good friend Rudy are out for a drink. The bar isn't one you would normally have come to, but it has its charm. The Misfits are playing on the house speakers. Fake cobwebs are strewn all over the place. Halloween is only a few days away.

Rudy brings up the old abandoned prison. He tells you that he's heard that some strange stories are coming from people who've snuck into it. Because you two are in an adventurous mood, you decide to go there yourselves.

When you arrive, the moon is pouring light down onto the window smashed husk of the prison. The fence around the property is easy enough to get past, but how to get inside?

To try the front doors, turn to 31.
To head to the right side, turn to 43.
To head to the left side, turn to 11.
If you decide you've gotten close enough and are ready to leave, turn to 35.

    Turn to page 11.

You decide the front door is too conspicuous by far, and besides, if there's any remaining security still in place, that's where it would be. If the door is deadbolted, or there's a motion light still up and running, you'd have to try to break your way in and might be heard or spotted before you even get inside.

You turn to Rudy, whispering conspiratorially.

"Screw the front, let's see if there's a side door or window or something" you say.

Cloud cover is quickly rolling in and obscures the moon and night sky. It's almost entirely starless as you duck and begin your shambling jog alongside the building. The limited light you now have is from an ancient arc sodium streetlamp off in the distance, and you can see the faint clouds of your own breath as the night temperature begins to drop. In the shadow of the building, the temperature feels like it's plummeting fast. Despite the cold, you're determined to see the inside of the ancient prison for yourself, and you reach halfway down the side of the building before pausing to let Rudy catch up.

Breathing a little heavier than you are, Rudy soon approaches clutching his side with one hand.

"Ah, dammit - I've already got a stitch. Why did we decide to do this again?" he asks.

Though it's almost too dark to make out, and despite his half-hearted protest, you can practically feel him grinning at you. He's loving this.

Looking back towards the prison, you can make out a small door further down the building. It looks like it might have a small staircase leading up to it, but in the dark, it's really hard to say for sure. Scanning the roofline, you think you can make out a fire escape leading down from the roof edge, but the ladder and metal surround appear to be leaning at an odd angle. It could just be a trick of the all but non-existent light, but you suspect that ladder might be rustier than the Titanic and no longer soundly secured to the building.

To continue down the side of the building and explore the rear side entrance, turn to page 47.
To approach the building and see if you can find a way up to the fire escape, turn to page 32.
To double back towards the front door, turn to page 31.
If you decide you've gotten close enough and are ready to leave, turn to page 35.

You decide to approach the ladder. It turns out it's a roof access ladder with iron caging around it. The cage is locked at the bottom with a rusted paddlock. You and Rudy look for something to strike it with and find an intact two-by-four. Rudy is a little taller than you so he starts hitting the lock.

After ten or twelve strikes, and thinking it's not going to break, the lock pops and falls to the ground. Using some junk laying near by, you make a small pile to reach the bottom rung. It turns out all right and you both make it to the roof. From here you look out at the lights of the city a half a mile away.

Then you spot a figure across the prison roof. It doesn't move. You can call out to it, but have no idea who else would be out here in the middle of the night. Or, you could pretend you didn't see a creepy figure and just follow Rudy who has found a door that leads inside.

To call out to the figure, turn to 98.
To follow Rudy inside, turn to 75.

You call something out to the figure knowing that they had already seen you anyway. It starts moving towards you and Rudy in a way that doean't seem quite right. Then somehow it moves ahead by 10 or 15 feet instantly. Rudy gasps and stumbles backwards. You react pretty much the same way.

The figure is getting closer and closer in leaps and bounds. Yet, it isn't anymore clear as to what the figure is. Just a shadow of a person. A cutout of a man perhaps. Either way, when it catches you, the darkness of death arrives in a single moment.

    The End.
