PS. Please enlighten me on how to post a video so the video shows like you did. Thanks!
Yes! :-) Also Koko Taylor, Ma Rainey, Big Mama Thornton! Etta James! Memphis Minnie! There are tons of them. I think Janis was great too, but she was following in the formidable musical footprints of these others. (Now I must go put on some music.)
Here are a few for you Jon (and thanks to ESW for reminding me of a few, feel free to add your own examples)...
Bessie Smith
Memphis Minnie
Koko Taylor
Big Mama Thornton
Etta James
ps. Thanks to Jon for showing me how to post video.
Ms. Taylor...WoW!!!!
I am impressed!

I can only say good things about Angela Aki. I first discovered her because she sings the end song to Final Fantasy XII, and Kiss Me Goodbye is just brilliant.
Her version of Eyes on Me from Final Fantasy VIII is also brilliant
I've heard a few more songs by her on youtube, but the ones I really remember are Santa Fe (great) and Blue Shadow (a Japanese language song sung to the music of Whiter Shade of Pale by Procul Harem, which imo is FANTASTIC)
So if you get a chance, please give her a wee bit of a listen.
Also the female singer of Limbic System(link) is absolutely fantastic. Again, just my opinion, but she's also an amazing harpist
I cannot believe the names that no one has mentioned here so I guess I'll have to do it lol

Obviously only my opinion, but Nico is the one thing keeping me from loving the first VU album. I love most of those songs, but prefer the live versions with Lou singing. Everyone's tastes vary but Nico's voice has never been my thing. I do love Cass Elliott though so thanks for including her in your list.
"Nothing surprises me anymore." - Walt Longmire
Amanda Isbell (formerly Amanda Shires)
And one of her with her husband and his band (which she's also part of in addition to her own band).

From that original list, I like Sinead, Loreena McKennitt, Tegan and Sara, and-to a lesser extent, Tori Amos. Don't know if anyone has mentioned these yet but this is my own list:
-Dar Williams
-Suzanne Vega
-Beth Orton
-Kasey Chambers
-Iris DeMent
-Lucinda Williams
Edit: Looks like I already mentioned #6.

Personally, I don't have a problem with Reed's voice-I'm a huge folkie, so I love lots of artists with sub-optimal singing voices. I just don't think he cuts it as a "rock and roll" musician, even an experimental one. On the other hand, I like Laurie Anderson's compositions. Also, I do appreciate his songwriting on some level-I think the cover Kirsty MacColl and Evan Dando did of Perfect Day is amazing, for example.
This Gal's voice reminds me of Janice...The Janice.
Just ignore the 80's garb and listen to her voice.

Kristin Hersh (solo and Throwing Muses)
Sort of a harsh singer, I think the best intro to her voice is "counting backwards".
