Report: Xbox 360 Failure Rate Reaches 54%
New survey says Microsoft's Red Ring of Death contines to rise.
by Jim Reilly
August 17, 2009 - If your Xbox 360 hasn't broken down yet or suffered from the dreaded red ring of death, then consider yourself pretty lucky.
A new survey published in Game Informer's print edition indicates the Xbox 360 failure rate has climbed to a shocking 54.2%. The magazine surveyed nearly 5000 readers, asking them about their experience dealing with broken consoles.
Here are their findings:
Console failure rate
Xbox 360 – 54.2%
Playstation 3 – 10.6%
Wii – 6.8%
Percentage of console owners who suffered a second hardware failure after the original repair.
Xbox 360 – 41.2%
Playstation 3 – 14.7%
Wii – 11%
Percentage of people who rate their customer service experience "very helpful"
Nintendo – 56.1%
Sony – 51.1%
Microsoft – 37.7%
Percentage of respondents whose friends have had console hardware failures.
Xbox 360 – 69.9%
Playstation 3 – 12.4%
Wii – 6%
The magazine also makes a few notes about their results:
The reason the Wii has the lowest hardware failure rate could be because console is played the least of the three. 41.4% of Wii owners surveyed said they play the console less than one hour a day, meanwhile the majority of Xbox 360 (40.3%) and Playstation 3 (37%) owners say they play their console on an average of three to five hours day.
Also, only 3.8% of respondents said they'd never buy another Xbox system because of the failure rates.
How have your experiences been?
Update: Here is Microsoft's response to the report issued to IGN:
Microsoft stands behind the Xbox 360 as a superior entertainment console with one of the best warranties in the industry. We are constantly improving the design, manufacture and performance of the console through extensive testing of potential sources of any problems. Xbox 360 is pleased to maintain the title of "most played console" and the vast majority of Xbox 360 customers have enjoyed a terrific gaming and entertainment experience since their first day, and continue to, day in and day out.
Wow...over half? I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
Elodin: "Tombs is for feckless twits who can't chew their own food. My boy's a Re'lar! He has the feck of twenty men!"
Kvothe: “Books are a poor substitute for female companionship, but they are easier to find.”
Simmon: ”It’s just ointment in case you get burned...but if you mix it with piss, it turns into candy.” Sim’s expression was deadpan. “Delicious candy.”
"The vast majority of Xbox 360 customers have enjoyed a terrific gaming and entertainment experience since their first day, and continue to, day in and day out."
A 64% failure rate doesn't speak to a "vast majority" of success.

It'll take a lot more than words and guns,
A whole lot more than riches and muscle.
The hands of the many must join as one.

Anyone have any news on when Diablo III comes out? I just got back into playing Diablo II just recently. Hehe I love that game so fun. But yeah anyone have any news?
Also has anyone played Aion? If so can you tell me if it's any good.
There's no release date on Diablo III Deschain. Like usual, Blizzard is taking their sweet time but its always worth it. Some new trailers have been released, just go to IGN's youtube page to find them. I'm too drunk right now to post links.
Picked up Skate 2 and really digging it for the most part. I highly recommend it to anyone that liked the first game. I also bought Mirror's Edge but haven't gotten a chance to play it yet.
And I also found Aladdin for the Sega Genesis at a pawn shop. Goddamn that game is hard. I have no idea how in the hell they expected kids to enjoy that shit. I forgot how hard it was even on amateur. Still, I am the self proclaimed retro platformer king and I got pretty far in a couple of hours of game play. I'll go back and beat it after I get done with Skate 2 and Mirror's Edge.
So, are you looking forward to Cataclysm? If I were still willing to put in the money and time, I'd probably roll a Worgen on day one.
On another note, I've been playing a lot of Mass Effect recently. PC version, because I hear the menu system on the 360 wasn't that great.
I dunno. For $20, I feel like I got a cubic ton of game. The voice-acting is great, the missions pretty epic. Deciding whether or not to free a potentially disastrous alien race into the galaxy (your only other option being to commit xenocide)? I like it.
Arkham Asylum got a pretty damn good review on IGN. Check it out :

And on Joystiq
I was gonna wait to get Arkham Asylum, but this Best Buy deal... forget about it. Off to my bank's website to transfer money...
