It just means that having that kind of inconsistency in writing would be pretty common for me personally.

The kindness of close friends is like a warm blanket
whatever that meant, I am inclined to agree
the universe[s] Sai King undertook to describe is way too complex and goes too far beyond human experience and 3- or even 4- dimensional logic; it just can't be put into human words without (apparent) contradictions

Well thats good. If you ever do write volume's of books, spanning years
of your life, encomposing most all your other work as a writer, I'll be
happy to give them a go "warts and all" as they say. Best of Luck to you
and write on!

I don't agree. I understand that author's of any series make mistakes, but after that intoduction to the Gunslinger about how he had made changes to clean it up so it would be easier to read (I don't feel it needed it) and to correct mistakes in it, it seems like there shouldn't be so many. It almost appears that he didn't go back and reread the first two before continuing the series and considering the long period of time between the first three books he should have done that simply to refresh his memory of the details. I do enjoy reading them and I wouldn't let it get in the way of enjoying it, I just thought it seemed unprofessional of him, considering how many books he has written.
I have no problem understanding the universe he has created. I can't see why it would be too complex to put into human terms. I create my own all the time!
you got me on that one!

Hmm. The only oen that got me was the Walter/Marten thing.
The thing with the mule & the donkey I think is an easy mistake to make and an easier one to overlook. How many people look at a donkey and know beyond the shadow of the doubtthat it definitely is a donkey & not a mule? They are pretty similar animals.
I guess as much as I obsess over these books, I don't nit-pick them. I know a lot of people who do that to the stories they love & in the end I think they take something from themselves. I don't want to talk myself out of loving every moment of the story!
RC9, you are perfectly correct about this.
Mostly what we're talking about here are simple mistakes, made over a long period of time, on a series that was (in it's first 3/4 parts anyway) minimally edited.
It's no big deal, and does not affect our enjoyment of the series, and it's fun to find & talk about the inconsistencies.
And it's no disservice to King to discuss them. He doesn't need his Constant Readers to be tip-toeing around afraid to discuss mistakes or making excuses for them.
eg. A Mule is a Mule, and a Donkey is a Donkey.
Stephen King wasn't looking at an animal and thinking it was a Mule one day and thinking it looked more like a Donkey on a day months later.
He introduced it as a Mule in a story, and maybe months later, forgot and thought the story featured a Donkey. Simple mistake. No big deal. A good editor would have caught it.
*EDIT* .. and I must reiterate - none of this affects my enjoyment of the series. I LOVE this Series.
Constant Readers are often noticing typo's, inconsistencies and general bloopers in the series. I've merged a couple of threads to make this the official place to list and discuss anything you notice of this nature
What if we changed the name of the title to encompass all typos , from all authors and all bodies of writing?
Well, it'd have to move forums if we did as it's DT specific right now...was that what you had in mind when you started it?
Originally, yes ... but I figure we'd have a lot more activity in here if it wasn't restricted to just one series. Whatcha think?
That you're probably right ...where should I move it to?..Cara Laughs?...Dutch Hill?
Hey everyone! I made this account because I have a question about something that's really bothered me since I finished DT, but I tried searching and don't see anyone talking about it.
Spoiler:
I'm not sure exactly how long before Drawing this is because the dates in that book are confusing (maybe due to them being in realities with different timelines than ours?) but it can't be more than a year.
Anyway, the point is I can see absolutely no reason for Odetta to lie at this point. Maybe I'm being overly racially sensitive, but this seems like a much bigger continuity issue than Donkey/Mule or something. Did Stephen King just forget, or am I missing something here, or what? I'd really like to hear what people think! Thanks!
Not 100% sure since I am going solely from memory here, but I am pretty sure thatDT-6
If that is the case, than GonnaRideIt is correct that what Odetta tells Eddie on the beach is inaccurate. Clearly a factor of King writing Drawing long before S.o.S. and probably not having fleshed out (pun intended) all of Odetta Holmes' backstory at that point. Good catch!
Didn't Detta have the relations with Darryl. Odetta so far as we know did not have sex with a white guy before Eddie. Susannah remembering Detta's rendezvous with Darryl (presuming I remember correctly) does not equal to a continuity error IMO. Of course she would have some of both Detta and Odetta's memories after being merged into Susannah.
Edit: I may be wrong. I think Jayson may be right there.
Anyway I think Susannah had more than 2 personalities. I think she is thinking about it somewhere... It could have been another personlity... that was quite similar to Odetta but wasn't perfectly Odetta.
Or I would like to find an answer way too much.
Roland would have understood.
I think R of G descriptions of what happened is right on. I'm pretty sure they had sex. I didn't know the forum rules so I didn't put the direct quote in, but the word "limp" is in there Also, since this is at a civil rights event in Oxford, and Susannah is remembering it fondly, it almost has to be Odetta.
I never thought about Susannah having more than 2 personalities. If each one had a lot of active time it seems like the gaps would become too hard to account for, but there could be small personalities that take over briefly, like one whenever she was with Darryl. I tried pretty hard to think of events that would suggest this is the case, or things it would explain that I didn't understand in the stories, but I couldn't think of much of anything. So yeah, I think that might be reaching a little
It's ok to quote here; if you suspect your quote to be a spoiler, put it in spoiler box (use that black-and-yellow radioactive icon), unless the whole thread is declared to be a Spoiler Thread and has Spoiler Warning in the title; if some inappropriate language is used in the quoted text, it's entirely the author's responsibility!

i know you will prolly never see this because this is a really old post but i'll say it anyway...
sometimes an artist will flip a whole picture horizontally, believe it or not sometimes it just happens to look better, and depending on how they did it, redoing the gun might have been too inefficient.
sometimes someone else such as the cover designer will take that illustration and flip it for the same reason... or to make the title fit better, etc. etc.
not always the Illustrator's mistake, not saying it definitely isnt, but ya never know...
Still a great spot though!!!!!!
