I'm also irritated when they write, "He lighted a match." or "She lighted a cigarette." The correct word is 'lit'. I have never lighted a match in my life but I've lit a few.
Another side irritation. In TV and movies, whenever someone is watching Jeopardy, they say their answers in the form of a question. I've watched Jeopardy with quite a few people, and they never, NEVER do that in real life. They just blurt out the answer.
And since I'm on this nonsensical rant, why does everyone use the word 'basically' so much nowadays? Basically, it drives me nuts!
