I just finished watching this and I loved it! Lots of literal jaw-dropping-wide-open moments for me. I got mine from Netflix and it DOES have the alternate ending whereSpoiler:Creepy!!

I absolutely hated Paranormal Activity as a premise; the movie itself was amazingly scary. However, I cannot come to enjoy it because it's an exploitation film. Usually, I'm a fan of them. I love any film that could be considered "grindhouse," I love the old-school horror movies, and I love pornographic exploitation. The problem with PA is that it exploits something that it far too common: belief in the paranormal. And unlike a tastefully done movie, they throw it over the top, just like A Haunting in Connecticut did (I live 10 minutes from that house, and my friend lives across the street). The homemade movie idea just nailed-in the point they were trying to instill into the audience, which is: this could happen to you. I hate movies that exploit unfounded fears. When a horror movie just constantly punches you in the face with its "realism," I cannot take it seriously nor can I label it as "worth watching." The point of a horror movie is either to subtly push the idea that it could be real, or to be completely, obviously fiction. Trying to find a new, more pronounced way to make it seem real just bashes the point of "horror."
Final verdict:
Scary as hell, not worth a penny to see. It's actually a complete waste of time. The writer, director, producer, and the rest of the crew have produced something so "life-like" that it kills all quality.

and the gunslinger followed.
I didn't think it was scary at all. There was too much of the couple and not enough scary material, imo.

You have to remember that the version we saw together was slightly different than the theatrical version, Hannah. Specifically, the sounds were enhanced for theaters and helped to add some extra bump. But, yeah...creepy, but not super scary.

Oh yeah, we totally watched the bootleg copy that some creepy ex-boyfriend of my sister's gave us.

IMO...its a POS. Now, we are going to be flooded with these cheap movies because of the attention that its gotten. Great PR, have to give them that.
I was not impressed. I thought that Blair Witch Project was much more entertaining. (I was actually young and naive enough to believe in it when it came out) I watched this movie alone, at 3 AM, in the dark, in the house by myself, and did not find it scary in the least.
I did not however get to see the alternate ending. That might have given me a tingle. Also, there is a lot to be said about the sound quality in a theater. (though I do have surround sound at home)
As far as sound goes, there was some bangs and such in PA, but I don't remember any creepy music or anything. (which I always find to be one of the scariest elements of a horror film) Turn down the volume on a horror movie and they are rarely scary at all. It is the anticipation of the jump that is creepy, not the jump itself. (at least for me)

I just saw it for the first time and really liked it, it was a very minimalist compressed film, all tension really, which is always much scarier than a reveal where the monster actually shows up, it just milked tension for the whole movie I enjoyed all 3 different endings but each one changed the film just slightly in a different manner than the other ones did
if the worlds gonna end then let's get it over with, i got shit to do
And now it's time for a trailer/reaction moment:
Here's a trailer:

And now a successful thread necro has happened.
I thought it was relatively scary. Depsite having a low shit myself threshold when it comes to horror films I love wathcing them. Paranormal ones are my favs and this is right up my street. It didint scare me as much as I figured it would but i watched a different ending from the theatrical relase one so maybe this had some bearing on it. I also didint know there were three different type of endings.
I think, for me, paranormal films scare me more than any others because i dont discount the possbility of paranormal activity and I wonder if that has some bearing whether someone finfs the film either scary orny good.
I've been involved in paranormal investigations for heading on 11 years now. The last 3.5-4 of the years have been heavily involved with demonic haunts. I can personally say that Paranormal Activity is the more authentic haunting movie that I have ever seen I know a lot of people do not like it because it isnt one of the modern day crap horror (which i still like) that hollywood is making but my honest opinion is its the most accurate ive ever seen on screen (sorry about the grammar my computers gone crazy wont let my capitalize or use periods etc)
The fact that I believe in nothing supernatural may contribute to the fact that I was pretty much bored by the movie. Honestly though I have no problems with suspension of disbelief. I think the whole Blair Witch "realism" thing is what pulls me out of the movie.
Yes, probably. Bears believe in many things supernatural, and were terribly bored.

bears are back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just don't go for these movies that go on the "based on real events". As soon as I see this I think NOTHING is real.
I used to hang out at the ARE (Edgar Cayce foundation) and pour through their extensive library on the paranormal and hang out with people there. I found some entertaining reading and had good conversations, but never managed to find anything to incline me towards belief.
No, I have never found anything of the kind, either. I think it's rather a matter of personal inclination, - with me it's mostly spiritual experience and intellectual reasoning, not somebody else's observations or discoveries. The trick is, spiritual experience and intellectual reasoning of different people bring them to different conclusion; so, again, it must be a matter of personal inclination (based, in its turn - ... well, it's a vicious circle, of course, like most anything)
The "real events" movies are all right provided they are movies. Too often the directors think that the "true story" speaks for itself and they don't have to do anything at all.

i'll agree with the whole bored thing. I even switched the film off and so haven;t seen any of the endings. it just seemed seemed like i was waiting to be scared and if thats the case in a film then there is no story, you need to be so carried away with the story of the film that when the scary bits do happen they do scare the bejesus out of you
can anyone let me know the 3 endings? its for my neice who loved the film, and i think she would be excited to know there was more than 1
I didn't know there were three endings. As for the boredom...well, I feel it could have benefitid by being edited down to a solid half hour-45 minutes. I was waiting and waiting and waiting to be even a little scared. It never really happened.
I loved it, myself. Saw it a few weeks ago, and I was really impressed with its simplicity. The fact that the effects were basically cheap to do and yet they were pretty good at hiding its cheapness is something I liked the most. But yeah, I can see why, in this age of handheld camera films seems to be the current fad like Cloverfield and Rec (although, it has to be said, I loved Rec, have yet to see 2, though) why the whole pretending to be real thing can get frustrating. Sometimes, it can be a good storytelling device, but only when used sparingly. I suspect PA2 might not have quite the same impact as the first one. Sorry, not suspect: know. It is a sequel, after all. More importantly, it's a horror sequel. 'Nuff said.

I agree. I loved the first one, but I'm kinda worried with what they're going to do with the second. I don't think it'll have anywhere near the same impact that the first one had. The first one seriously scared me. Maybe it is because I'm a strong believer in the paranormal, I don't know. And I loved the minimalist approach as well. I think that's what made it even scarier to me. You don't see anything, but you know something is there.

Exactly. It's what I love about old horror films that really scared me like the original Halloween and Alien: what you don't see, what you can imagine, can be much scarier than what happens on screen. I'm not saying PA2 doesn't have the chance to be good, or even great, but the first one was fresh, new, and pretty much took most people by surprise. This time, the audience will be expecting the full on scares, which is going to dilute the effect that the first film had, imo.

I think we were just talking about this same thing the other day
I'll definitely be seeing the new one when it comes out, but I don't have very big expectations for it. I hope they don't go for the big scares but I have a feeling they will. The scene that scared me the most in the first one was when he wakes up in the middle of the night and she's missing, he gets up and goes downstairs to find her. It's such a simple scene but I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! It's the anticipation of what could happen. Where was she? Was she ok? The whole time I kept expecting something to jump out at me but it didn't.

I think one of the biggest decisions with a horror story (story or movie) is how much to show. While alot of the older films (and books) benefited from not showing too much (and I think that's a good thing), I think PA went the opposite direction and showed way too little. What is it were supposed to be afraid of? Imagination goes a long way, but if you've gotta' imagine too much there may as well be no film...you can just imagine it.
