DT Typos, Bloopers and Artwork Mistakes.

Given the backstory given earlier in the comics of the CK's origins, it seems as if the story would be handed down as knowledge through generations of Eld's line. He seems someone the protectors of the Tower might want to have kept an eye on periodically. Roland certainly knows more about him in books 5-7 than he did previously. It's just another example of the change in continuity present through much of the progression of the books. It's always debatable whether it was necessary, but I dislike a lot of it with regard to the comics.

Oh, I'm sure that the gunslingers knew of the Crimson King. In Wizard and Glass, for example, Steven Deschain tells Roland:

"Its only by the grace of the gods and the working of ka that you have not been sent west, one more true gunslinger out of Martens road....out of John Farsons road....and out of the road of the creature that rules them."

Roland probably knew vague legends of the Crimson King too....probably under one of his other titles like Lord of Discordia or Los' though, since he's unfamiliar with his Crimson King title and only works out the connection as the series progresses.

Consider Roland's response to Susannah when he reads the writing on the signs:

"'Do you know what any of that truck means, Roland?' Susannah asked.
Roland shook his head, but he looked troubled, and that introspective look never left his own eyes."

R of G, technically, Roland doesn't say anything. A few pages earlier he gives us a clue as to why that may be when:

"Roland was startled to find himself hurt by what Eddie had said - You lie when it suits your purpose - but he went on. After all, it was essentially true."

Roland shakes his head, maybe not so much in denial of Susannah's question, but because these siguls are important keys to the story he knows he will have to tell and to admit knowledge at that moment might have confused himself and/or the fledgling tet.

Or maybe he just didn't know what the hell Susannah was talking about when she used the word "truck." Who can say for certain?

I don't think this one was mentioned, so I'll throw it in.

In WotC, despite Roland always wearing the same stuff and seemingly having fingers, I think one of the images is out of place. It seems to follow the right order, but the image before Roland dancing (I think it's titled 'Do you see him?') doesn't seem to correlate to any of the story before it.

In The Wastelands when Susannah is talking to Blaine she taps her throat three times as Roland did in River Crossing. Blaine says thanks but points out that it is the female formal greeting and that for men it is to tap the chest three times.

However, we don't see the distinction between tapping the chest and throat anywhere else- at least I dont think so.

It's not a typo or error. The difference is in who is being addressed. Females (throat) and Males (chest). Since Blaine claims his sex is male, the proper way to address Blaine would be left hand on the chest.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but my paperback copy of the seventh book (with the big red rose on the cover) has an odd typo. During the Odd's Lane chapter, the heading on the top of every right-side page randomly goes from The White Lands of Empathica to In This Haze of Green and Gold, which is from earlier in the book.

Alright, so back to the artwork of Michael Whelan in DT7. Although I love his art and the seventh book contains my favorite renditions of all the characters, I believe that he DID make a mistake. On page 740, when Patrick Danville is drawing the Unfound Door, the book says, "It was a perfect representation of the Unfound Door, she thought. THE ARTIST wasn't printed on it, and the doorknob was plain shiny metal-no crossed pencils-but that was all right. She hadn't bothered to tell him about those things, which had been for her benefit and understanding." However, in picture where Roland is sitting in front of the Unfound Door with his face in his hands (just after Susannah has left), the door clearly has "The Artist" printed on it, and the doorknob clearly has two crossed pencils on it.

I know its probably been said before, but ...

Jake's hair. Jake is blonde. It says so, very clearly, several times. But Whelan is the only artist who portrays him correctly. I love the illustrations in The Waste Lands, but the first time I flipped through the book before I read it and looked at the pictures, I was wondering who this new boy was, because Jake had blonde hair! You don't have to read the books in detail to know it; its one of the most basic descriptors of a person. But Whelan (whose work I love) is the only one who got it right.

I'm currently re-reading the series and in DTV WotC I'm confused as to why the robot Andy throat taps to the predominantly male group of gunslingers and Calla-folk travelling to the village (around page 220ish)? Can anyone offer any thoughts?
I've been trying to keep track of this throat/breastbone tapping and it's mostly holding up except in this instance.
Though I guess Andy IS a robot afterall...

2. Andy is implying they are all women.

I'm re-reading WotC right now and I don't think I've come across that one yet.

I did spot a "tale" instead of "tail" in the UK edition

when Mia is killing the rat in the barn at around 380 pages.

I'm on a re-read, currently reading Drawing.
Came accross another little mistake, don't know if it's been posted before.

When Roland gives Eddie one of the guns to bring with him when Eddie & Odetta go ahead up the beach leaving Roland behind (page 286 of my edition), he tells Eddie "..I've loaded with the ones I believe were wetted least - three from the buckle side of the left belt, three from the buckle side of the right..."

BUT, how could that be possible.
When he segregated the bullets back after the wetting (page 27),
"He put these shells, hopefully still good, in a pile......Twenty" & "..He removed the rest and put them in another pile, Thirty seven" & "He tore away another piece of his shirt, put the other shells, the ones that had been wetted, in it and tied it up.."

SO, by the time of page 286 the 'good' shells have all been used. There's no way he could possibly pick out the next 6 best ones as described above out of the 37 bad ones. Impossible.

Later (page 308) when he fired in the air to prove to Eddie that the bullets MIGHT fire, he said
"..because i loaded the gun i just fired with shells from the backs of my gunbelts - with shells that took the worst wetting.." - again, impossible?

I've been rereading The Gunslinger and found a page where David is referred to as a falcon instead of a hawk.

I came across this thread while searching for something else, and can verify the tapping throat/chest error exists in multiple places.

1. Roland taps his throat when addressing Aunt Talitha in River's Crossing, in TWL.
2. Susannah does the same when addressing Blaine, at the end of TWL/beginning of WaG. Blaine says that insofar as he has a sex, he is male. Susannah doesn't understand, and it is Roland who explains that tapping the throat with the right hand is used when addressing women, and tapping the breastbone with the left is used when addressing men.
3. In WaG, Roland taps his throat with his right hand when meeting Susan for the first time.
4. In WaG, Sheriff Avery taps "the base of his throat" multiple times when addressing Roland, Cuthbert and Alain on their visit to the Sheriff's office. This could conceivably be the top of the breastbone, although it's a stretch.
5. In WaG, Roland and Cuthbert both tap their throats when meeting Susan at the Mayor's dinner
6. In WaG, Roland taps his throat with his left hand when apologizing to Jonas, "as was proper when addressing an elder"
7. In WaG, Reynolds taps his throat three times while muttering "Bless the Turtle", seemingly as a ritual of protection against rabies

I suspect King came up with different gestures for men and women (and later elders) on the spur of the moment, just to add a bit of color to the riddles scene, and then forgot about it, later using the simple tapping of the throat as a gesture of respect.
