an autograph only has the value its recipient places in it anyway. personally idgaf if bill gates, stephen king, johnny depp, and nelson mandela ALL signed something, it's still the same piece of shit it was before to me. i'm gonna pay for your fucking SIGNATURE? something that nine times out of ten is facsimiled, and can easily be acquired in the modern age via hacking and thievery, and really isn't worth shit because it's merely 3 american cents worth of ink? fuck outta here. i would choke the shit outta any idiot who ever asked me for a fuckin "autograph".
I was in a position where I had to sign my previous band record (7"). It was flattering but really uncomfortable and awkward. A few days later while out at the mall, I was in a guitar store (Walter's at Masonville, e_taylor will know what I mean) and these teen punkrockers kept looking my wife's and my way and when I saw one of them mouth "yo, that's him", I quickly paid for the strings and left the store at a quick pace. A little later we remembered them as some kids from a show we played.
I'm pretty introverted by nature so this was really uncomfortable. I can't imagine what it's like for a real celebrity.
And no, I didn't choke anyone either.
it can also cost you thousands...
back in the late 80's I signed my name to some gas chromatography lab data for the EPA that the owner of the contracted pesticide analysis lab had run (Craven Labs)...
to make a very long story a bit short...
FBI raid, biggest EPA investigation ever, job loss, weeks and weeks of sitting in U.S. attorney general's office going over years of old data, testifying before a grand jury, expensive lawyers, multiple court appearances, 3 years later pleading guilty to a charge of tampering with government data (in my case- a charge for being stupid and trusting my boss) , a $10,000.00 fine... and three years of unemployment.
all because I put my name on a damned sheet of paper... guess what... I don't sign a freaking thing now that I don't know exactly what it is and 100% what it means.
but hey, at least I got my 15 minutes /3+ years of "fame" (from the New york Times to the London Times) ...
....and I'm feeling much much better today.
BTW - the owner went to jail for 5 years and got a 20 million dollar total fine....lab was closed down permanently.
lesson 1: EPA is NOT someone to muck with.
lesson 2: Don't sign anything.

Got Dayum, that's horrible.
"So many vows. They make you swear and swear. Defend the King, obey the King, obey your father, protect the innocent, defend the weak. But what if your father despises the King? What if the King massacres the innocent? It's too much. No matter what you do, you're forsaking one vow or another."
yeah... 1991 was a tough year for sure...
in february alone - I was handcuffed by the FBI and learned all the US attorney generals office personally... in a bad way...
I lost my job/insurance,
I lost all my friends (it was a small company (under 60 people) and we all hung out together
I found out I had a class 4 melanoma cancer (5 is the worst)...and of course... no insurance or job
I was banned from working in the field I had tried to make a career in for 5 years.
My mother died 2/16/91
and my car was totaled by a hit and run.
no matter what bad things have happened since... I always say it has been worse and I survived.
bad as it was...
It forced me to go back to college and seek a totally new field- engineering... which I did and now design computer chips which pays 5+ times as much and I enjoy so much better.... and I don't have to handle nasty chemicals and dangerous pesticides.
life lessons can be tough... but sometimes necessary.
Hey man, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, neh? Keep your head up.

How horrible! I am glad you have come through this. This scares the bejesus out of me, though. I have POA or some such to sign our Director's name to all but one piece of paper we deal (I work for the government, there's LOTS of papers and signing). Lots of times, I will have something shoved under my face and be told "sign this" and that's all. Lots of money (that comes under close scrutiny), life and death decisions regarding families...it all makes me nervous sometimes.
People love frozen yogurt. I don't know what to tell you.
Jeebus, Terry, what a nightmare. Glad it's long in your past.
Don't let the power go to your head, Bethany.

HA! I know my place, which is basically to stay in my office and sign shit when told

I wish Karen could learn to express her feelings, it so hard to read between the lines.
(Best to you, Karen! )
