They didn’t say and the fine print isn’t out yet. It’s pretty serious.

That’s frightening! Not far from me, in Madison, people are being asked to report in their neighbors if spotted in a gathering of 10 or more. I’m all for the social distancing, but when it turns into martial law, that’s one step too far.
Yeah, let's all start ratting on each other.

What we need is solidarity, not backstabbing.

For the first time in my life I scared of the future. My wife owns the company I work for but thinks we should lay me off. Today.... we are lying off 34 people. My wife is upstairs calling each one... one by one. I can’t convey the feelings I have right now..... I feel broken.

These are dark and scary times for many people. Do your best to remain as positive as you can (Very easy to say, and very hard to do). This will pass. Hopefully between any government payments you might be eligible for, and savings you have, you will make it through ok.

Positive thoughts being sent your way.

I'm sorry to hear all the bad news, guys. Kris, hope this solves asap as well.

We're on mandatory quarantine since last Thursday and it will last for sure until April 3rd...and it's very likely it will be extended for two more weeks at least.

We don't have that many cases yet (less than 300 infected and 4 deaths) but it will get worse unless we all follow the prevention measures. Stay safe, everyone.

And I want to note here that the fact that they were right is not luck or magic but is because we have entire fields based on studying diseases and disease transmission and population-level health and health infrastructure and about a dozen other very specific health-related disciplines, and they were all largely ignored the past couple of weeks out of political convenience and because much of our media ecosystem is broken and doesn't prioritize dissemination of factual information from subject-matter experts over grabbing eyeballs for ads.

Please avoid large gatherings. Please wash your hands. Please stay home whenever it's possible, including working from home.
Re-upping this from 10 days ago and would like to add: please definitely ignore all the randos who are making predictions based on their gut or what they saw on the news or what their boss told them or that one article they read. Most of the people who have an opinion about this are wrong and have been wrong for weeks and basing your decisions on their opinions will put you and other people in jeopardy. This outbreak has a very clear trail of absolutely shit forecasts from most talking heads and very accurate ones from experts (infectious disease epidemiologists).

We are not on the upswing (in the US). Things are bad and will continue to get worse. If we are very, very, lucky we might see an inflection point in ~10 days. If we are lucky-ish, and more locations start shelter-in-place measures, we might see a leveling-off in ~3 weeks. These are optimistic scenarios.

Even if your particular area is not quarantined please avoid any gatherings. Please wash your hands. Please stay home whenever possible.

End of PSA. Maybe no one needs it, in which case, hooray! Go TDT!

In other news, I have a nice bit of human kindness to share! Will write a small post tomorrow. My wife was actually home this weekend and I spent all my energy trying to conserve hers so I'm a bit beat at the moment.

I'm very sorry to hear this and I'm even sorrier for those 34 people who got devastating news today. I hope that you and they can rebuild over time and will receive the necessary support and assistance needed to get through this. I have read dozens of stories like this over the last few days, from the perspectives of the business owners who are facing this reality as well as from the workers who are now worried about healthcare (in the US at least, where most healthcare is tied to employment) and rent (which I'm assuming they pay in Canada as well!).

    My condolences, Kris.

Hey - would folks like to hear about how sometimes other humans are just awesome? I sure would! And, lucky me, I was the recipient this past weekend of some genuine human thoughtfulness!

I posted last week that we were experiencing, like many others, issues with hoarding in our small town. We have a Walmart, a small Piggly Wiggly, and a very small pharmacy that supply us and the neighboring areas. And all of them have been completely out of stock of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and every Lysol product for a while now. Being a moderately-sized household, we had decent supplies of those things. But having a critical medical provider in our household (my wife), we have been experiencing larger challenges for a longer period than most of our fellow citizens. We have adopted strict protocols governing how my wife leaves our house and returns after work, and how I conduct my weekly trip to the grocery store. Most items that come into our house are sanitized, and there is one entrance that we use exclusively for when one of us travels out into the world, and another that we use for low-risk stuff like taking the kids outside to play.

All of this has resulted in us running low on both hand sanitizer and Lysol, and with a dwindling supply of TP, with no local options for refilling these items. The two nearest population centers (30 mins east or 60 minutes west) have also been out of items, and have the added disadvantage of being, well, population centers, with lots more activity than our town (though much of that has ceased as of Saturday).

Anyway, after my post last week, I received a message from a fellow forum member. And shortly after the receipt of that message, I received this box in the mail, overnighted to us at no small expense from literally a thousand miles away:

    Inside:

Toilet paper, nitrile gloves, Lysol disinfecting wipes, and several containers of hand sanitizer!

    Simply amazing.

My wife, who is running absolutely ragged right now, wept. I teared up myself. Our small children were disappointed that there was nothing for them, for certainly a package so good as to make mama weep and papa's voice crack should contain something more exciting for toddlers than toilet paper and sanitizer! Maybe in later years, when we are swapping tales of the worst epidemic in our lives (for there will surely be a lot of tales told about this for the remainder of all of our lives), they will understand how this box brought their parents to tears.

This kind and generous spirited person refused to take any compensation for either the items or the shipping costs, and also asked to stay anonymous.

But I could not keep this story all to myself, especially when I think we all need to be reminded of the high capacity for goodness that some humans possess - that some people are caring and selfless in great measure, and expect nothing in return.

This human knows how big of a difference they made, and how their gift has had immediate and positive real-world consequences for a family in the trenches, but I thought you all should too!

We should all be so lucky to have half of that reservoir of goodness inside of us

Doesn't anyone think it is odd that when Obama was president, he had the swine flu pandemic and no one batted an eye when he finally issued a national emergency after 6 months. 10,000 plus Americans died and the media doesn't crucify him?
Does anyone know that roughly 21,000 plus people have died in the US from the flu since September first. Why isn't that on high alert?
Yes, this is a different type of flu that has no "cure" but everything from the CDC shows the mortality rate as being very low. Let's not forget you may never get the true numbers of the death toll from China. The rumors are that this has been going on since November over there.
People are talking about the death tolls in Italy as staggering and yet no one mentions how many Chinese immigrants do the manufacturing over there, or that the death rate for the common flu is roughly 9% as opposed to .1% in the US. Just throwing some things out there.
