    Default Greatest Singer of Loveeeee

    Me and a friend at work have been having this discussion for some time now. He thinks that Lionel Ritchie is the best love singer, my opinion is Al Green by far. So your thoughts!

    Are we limiting ourselves to male singers? Because if not, the correct answer is Etta James.

    What? No Elton John, Lobo, Michael Bolton, Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings, Harry Nilsson, or even Johnny Rotten?

    It'll take a lot more than words and guns,
    A whole lot more than riches and muscle.

    The hands of the many must join as one.
    And together we'll cross the river.

    If we are just sticking to male singers, Otis would be my answer as well. I suspect Amanda knows that.

    Ya know from time to time I play Frank Sinatra songs around the house
    ( remember I live with my 85 yr old MOTHER.) I like his style and voice but his idea
    of love song....Baby I cheated on you , dont be mad! *meh* far outways his good
    song choices. (IMO) I do love the rentition of Twilight time, and London town he does.

    I think it'd have been nice if Sinatra paid a little more attention to who wrote the songs he was singing (since it was rarely him). He covered the Beatles' "Something" for many years and famously stated it was his favorite Lennon/McCartney composition. It was written by George Harrison. Not to mention he always had to add in his little "Stick around Jack it may show". Who the freakin' hell is Jack? Cover artists shouldn't make up their own lyrics. Of course Harrison thought it was so funny that whenever he played the song live he added in the "Jack".

    I didn't even know that! I am not really much into English/American love songs, I just named Sinatra because of Strangers in the Night

    ::imagines dancing with Lady Linda::

    other than that, you know what I listen to... and Something is one of my favorite songs ever, but, of course, we won't stretch the definition so far as to call the late philosopher a singer of love[eeeeee]

    Absolutely, I'd not call George a "love singer" though he did write and perform several beautiful love songs throughout his career. Now, if we were talking about the best love song ever, I think I would have to seriously consider "Something" as my answer.

    Fair enough, best English language love song. I can't rightly say it's better than songs I don't know.

    Oh yeah. I'm aware. And for the record, my top female singer would be the same as yours.
