    Default Greatest Invention/discovery for mankind

In your opinion, what is the greatest invention/discovery for ALL mankind and why?

My vote goes to sterilizing canned food. The first was steam or heat but the reason it gets my vote is thise living in arid climates can live at an oasis or dig a well. This gets them water but their soil provides no crops or grazing for cattle (on a large scale.) Once the need for water is resolve, the second need is food. No refrigeration means the only other source od preservation was huge amounts of salt. this causes a greater need for water and limits food supply. Along comes sterilizing canned food and no fridge needed, a greater variety of food and limited spoilage was a great assist to the impoverished even in temperate climates.

    Your turn!!
All that's left of what we were is what we have become.

Definitely agree. The urge to speak and the development of language is responsible for much of what has come after.

Electricity is a good one, however, we (us humans) already carried around a form of electricity in our minds long before it was ever "invented".

Another great invention, written language. Without it we could not read, and that would bum me out.

Well, since I can't claim the copywrite I'll only point out that the thread is for discoveries too. It's been discovered (and rediscovered) by nearly all of us. It was however mostly a tongue-in-cheek statement.

Due to my initial response on the subject, that response was very much intentional.
