The two letters/numbers that do show are somewhere (not necessarily in order) in the "hidden" buyer's real eBay ID. Plus the feedback scores are not hidden. So if you know the usual cast of bidders and their feedback scores, you can make an educated guess.

The US Proof for Just after Sunset went for $566 on Ebay last night.
I saw that. I think that price is insane! Even if they turn out to be as rare as the Cell proof, I still think it is way too high. But then again, proofs are not my thing, so who am I to judge.
