I'd never heard of an art portfolio being produced with the proof. I had to check my notes to see if I even had one. I hope I haven't made a mistake here.

Is it a portfolio or just some loose illustrations in an envelope? I've got a copy that came with some illustrations in an envelope. Bought it back in 1997.

Hello all,

I was speaking with Jhanic yesterday to inquire about a proof I recently acquired. Based on his recommendation, Bill’s (Merlin), and many other kind people here, I have decided to share with you all a new item I am very happy to have found.

I visited New York City on Thursday to attend an exhibit of my favorite childhood (and adulthood) stories, Charles Dodgson’s “Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland”. The original hand-written manuscript, complete with illustrations, is on exhibit at the Morgan Library, and I would encourage all who are interested in this story to attend. The exhibit is on for one more day I believe. This is the first time in over three decades that the British Museum has kindly donated the piece to be viewed outside their collection and it’s impossible to say when it will be on U.S. soil again. This is one book that for all intents and purposes has been impossible to attain in a First Edition, since I started collecting books. The last copy that was sold was actually in the year I bought my first rare book, 1998. I know of a gentleman in Paris that has one of the 6 known copies in private hands, and he may be selling it in 2016 or 2017. I would love to see his copy, as it differs greatly from the 2nd printing.

While I was in the city for the 2 days, I made plans with the grand-daughter of a former Doubleday executive to have lunch with her grandfather and see an uncorrected proof copy of “Salem’s Lot”. I had originally thought she was given wrong information when she told me that the proof was not in long format, or light green in color. She told me it was off-white and small. I didn’t get a chance of seeing a photo in advance but I still agreed to meet up. When he showed me the proof in a little slipcase, I was floored. It was in fact “Salem’s Lot”, but not the standard oblong shape. This is small format, but still retains many errors that were fixed before the First Edition was printed for the October 1975 release.

On the first page (2nd paragraph – 3rd line), the main location is referred to as ‘Salem’s Lot and this was later changed to “Jerusalem’s Lot” for the First Edition. On the copyright page, under the ISBN it simply states “Library of Congress Catalog Number” in place of the actual number. There are a few other differences that I have noticed with a quick comparison to the First Edition, as well as compared to the oblong copy. It is a unique pre-publication proof that until yesterday I had never seen. George Beahm had talked about them in his “Stephen King Companion” book, but never gave any further details.

This gentleman told me that in the early 1980s he sold his proof copy of “The Stand” to a collector in England, and this has been confirmed by my friend Mark (Slow Mutants). He saw it in 2000 when he was looking for a Crane copy and passed on it because he had never seen this before and it was not in Fine condition. He told me that was his greatest regret in collecting books. I have since made contact with this owner and hope to travel there in a few weeks to try and buy it.
