When Oy died, I cried so hard and had to throw the book across the room in a rage. I've never gotten that emotional over the death of a character before, especially an animal character like Oy. I mean, I cried a whole bunch of times through the series, but I never expected Oy's death to bother me to that extreme. I didn't read the book again for a week after Oy's passing. I couldn't.

Maybe that's why it hit you so much.

    Roland would have understood.

Jake's. I was expecting it, because I could see what Ka had in store for Roland, but it still shattered me.

i voted for jake, it was roland and oy reaction that got to me
then when re reading it last year, i had to have my dog put down and reading D7 i knew what was coming and had to put it to one side for a few months then when i finally plucked up the courage to read it i cried when jake died and then had full on sobbing when oy died.

For me, it was pretty much a three-way tie between Jake, Oy, and Eddie.
All three deaths just broke my heart...

I ended up voting for Jake, though.

Do you think King himself cried while he was writing it? Maybe later?

    Roland would have understood.

Yes, love. His last words, they were the reason I threw the book. I have never thrown a book before that, and I have not since. But that one, that scene... It was a rending of heart and soul, to me.

    Good question.

I think he did. After all, he was closer to those characters than anybody.
I think he knew that was the only way to write it, and I think that's how he knew it was good.

Yes... but his death was... beautiful somehow. I know it sounds stupid but still. It was full of relief. He found his way home.

I don't know that it sounds stupid. It sure was a superb scene, my favorite in the whole series, and his departure was glorious.

Ack! It's not stupid at all, Letti! Dont say that!
Finding one's way home is beautiful, and the Father's path ended in strength of faith and glory in redemption.
    Lotsa good stuff there.
And you knew that in your heart, Letti; so you couldnt be stupid. You just didnt trust the words to say it properly on behalf of your heart.

Flagg's death truly did suck. It's a shame, as he's one of my favourite villains ever. If ONLY he had been wearing a ring like good ol' Saxon did!

Seriously though, I think the death that affected me the most was Eddie's. It comes COMPLETELY out of nowhere. They'd won the fight, they were really happy and celebrating, and then, BANG. Like Flagg's death, a bold choice, but unlike Flagg, one that actually worked. The moment Eddie died was the moment you knew there wasn't going to be any fun on the journey anymore.
