You know Kelvin as a measure of temperature. It seems William Thomson, Lord Kelvin was a busy man as he also discovered Kelvin waves in the ocean and the atmosphere and mantle. They behave in much the same way. They balance the Coriolis (the tendency of a wave of water, air and magma to veer to the right in the northern hemisphere and left in the southern.) effect against a shoreline. The wave retains it's shape as it flows with the shoreline to it's left in the southern hemisphere and right in the northern.( this is does not change if the shoreline is north, south, east or west facing.)
Many times I can be a bore. Tidal bore , the leading edge of a tidal flow that gathers and flows upstream in a coastal river or bay's estuary area and sometimes beyond. This is a true "tidal wave," not to be confused with a tsunami.
