I'm not sure if the hate is directed at him or the movies he's in. I definitely understand why people wouldn't like Man of Steel, BvS, and Justice League, but he does a good job in all of those.

I was middling on Man of Steel and BvS - but not because of Cavill as Superman (Or Affleck, for that matter), but because of how his character was written. I would love to see Cavill in a more conventional portrayal of the Man of Steel, and was dismayed when it was reported that he was out of the DCEU. This is VERY good news that he's back.

I always liked Cavill's Superman so I'm not sure why it seems there's a large group of people who have a problem with it. I think Man of Steel (despite the ridiculous amounts of destruction) is a lot better than people give it credit for.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I can say why DCEU Superman hasn't worked for me.

Traditionally, Superman didn't question whether he should help people. He didn't expect or need gratitude for helping people. He helped people because he felt a duty to do so, and because his powers gave him the ability to do so. That duty wasn't a burden; he chose that duty because it served justice for him to do so.

Nor was traditional Superman impossibly good or naive - he understood evil, and was sometimes tempted by it, but his strength of character overcame it. His first priority was to save and protect the weak - which was everyone, compared to him - even if it meant the villain got away (temporarily).

Maybe that Superman is impossible in a post 9/11 society - but a Superman full of self-doubt, who feels bitter because his deeds aren't appreciated, and who fights a powerful villain despite causing buildings (presumably full of people) to topple around him, is not a heroic figure. In Man of Steel, we are supposed to want Superman to win because he is the good guy - but nothing that he does *demonstrates* that he is the good guy. In BvS, Superman sneers at Batman that he (superman) is showing mercy because he doesn't dismember Batman. What a guy.

The character only works as heroic at all because we all know who Superman is from previous incarnations, not because of the portrayal of the character in the films themselves.

Having said all that, Cavill has the look and the manner of a definitive Superman, and would be so, if the script could just let the character rise above his own inadequacy as a hero.

I would bet that if the theaters opened up tomorrow there would be showings that would be sold-out.

I'm ready to go and would feel relatively comfortable doing so, provided they do the same thing as casinos and rope off every third or fourth seat.

Of course I can't find the video now but from what I've seen, Vegas is pretty much wide open. I think the dealers might be wearing masks and there are plastic partitions between seats but the people are wall-2-wall.

Man you guys are wild. No way am I going back to the theater any time soon. Things are open back up, but COVID wise nothing has changed. Numbers are only slightly lower than they were when we closed things down, and they're on the rise. The last thing I want to do is sit in a theater crowded full of people, half of which probably wouldn't be wearing masks.

Here in my province.. there is 1 million people. 1061 got the illness. NOT one person under 65 died. Not one person died that didn't have underlying medical conditions. We had 40 deaths... so like not even a half a percent. It is time to concentrate on herd immunity now.

Might be awhile for that to happen.

Many of you may have heard that the pandemic will be over when we achieve herd immunity. For herd immunity to protect us, however, we need to get between 60% to 80% of the US population immune to this virus. If we reach 80% of the population being immune, the virus would have a very hard time finding a new susceptible host to infect.

But immunity can only occur by natural infection or vaccination, and there is no guarantee that immunity from natural infection will be long-lasting. Only time will tell.

Even in the hardest-hit states, such as New York, only 20% of the residents of New York City have been exposed and successfully fought off the infection, compared to only 2.6% of the people in the Finger Lakes region of the state. This means that the city would need another two to three outbreaks, similar in magnitude to the one in April, to achieve herd immunity through natural exposure. The rest of the state would need years to get to this same goal.

Epidemiologists believe that only 2-5% of the US population nationally has been exposed to the virus and recovered, and infections have not been distributed evenly throughout the population.

This puts us a long way from beating this virus through natural exposure and the prospect of a successful vaccine remains uncertain. Therefore, we must find a way to live with this virus without sacrificing 1% of our population or going back to the strict restrictions of March and April.

However, a second wave of high infection rates and similar mortality rates is avoidable.

Exactly. There's no promise that you can't catch this again once you've already had it. Plus there's already signs of long term lung damage from catching it. I'm not nearly as worried about catching it myself as I am about giving it to my parents or my fiance's parents / grand parents all of whom are over 60. Some of which have asthma, one of those "underlying medical conditions". Maybe I'm too much on the other end of the spectrum, but I honestly think everyone (at least here in the states) has opened up far too early. Totally off topic though.

That reminds me, I need to watch the Red Son animated film. The graphic novel is one of my all time favorite What Ifs.

The Crisis on Infinite Earths that aired as part of the CW's Arrowverse crossover pretty much confirmed that all DC filmed media exists in the same multiverse, including the DCEU movies and the Burton Batman films. This is a no-brainer for me. It would be awesome.
