Was deciding between two films that were done in an early widescreen format that was tried briefly in the late 1920s and early 1930s, and only a handful of those large-format films actually survive. Both are from 1930. One is The Bat Whispers, which was a direct inspiration for the creation of Batman, but I think this one is the better-looking one (and has been released in HD), plus it has John Wayne in his very first starring role, I believe:

I had a '30's movie on my DVR that I just watched last night. Came back here to see if it was in the tournament, but it wasn't even nominated. It was Treasure Island (1934). Surprised it wasn't even nominated (but I guess I have seen less then 96 movies from the 30's so my bar is low).
