The Best Years of Our Lives is one of the greatest war films ever made. William Wyler was amazing. The young man in the film that lost both hands and had hooks gave what Wyler called the finest performance he had ever seen on the screen. He won two Oscars for the same performance (a special one was given in regards to his service time) as best supporting actor, a first also for a non pro actor to win. More about him and the Oscar that he sold at auction (also a first) here. Harold Russell

In 1989, it was one of the first 25 films to be entered into The Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry (along with several other films still competing this Tournament).
