I believe Might Joe Young was the first stop-motion work Ray Harryhausen did.
I'll second Brief Encounter.
I will nominate Hamlet (1948), Dir. Laurence Oliver. The first British film to ever win the Best Picture Oscar. A superb performance in the title role by the actor Oliver too.
Someone beat me to Mrs Miniver so,
Nominate The Lost Weekend (1945) Dir. Billy Wilder
Looking for FAB8 CD Number 439
Cabin in the Sky (1943)
Vincente Minnelli

And I'll second Kind Hearts and Coronets.
I will nominate Going My Way (1944), Dir. Leo McCarey. I believe that this accounts for all of the decade's Best Picture Academy Award winners. Bing Crosby's turn as golf playing Father O'Malley is not one to be missed. The film's popularity eventually resulted in a tv series of the same name with Gene Kelly in the lead. Great stuff.
National Velvet (1944)
Clarence Brown
