    Default The Great Movie Tournament - 1950s: Round 4 - Group 13 of 16

During the fourth round of The Great Movie Tournament, please vote for one film you would like to move onto the next round. The top film will be moving on. Keep in mind that the percentage of the vote a given film receives will determine its standing going forward.

The poll will run for seven days. Discussion is greatly encouraged!

The nominees are (please let me know if any video doesn't play for you):

    Seven Samurai (1954)
    Directed by Akira Kurosawa

    Watch Trailer

    Rashomon (1950)
    Directed by Akira Kurosawa

Yeah this was unfortunate, not an April Fools joke. When the final rankings for the previous round were tabulated and I was seeding the Round 4 groups, I actually gasped when I realized what would happen. Both should move on, but at least we're guaranteed a Kurosawa film in the playoffs.

And just to remind everyone, I know this question has come up a few times over the course of this whole event, but seeding is done (for all rounds past the first) by highest combined percentage, and seeded "left to right", meaning (using this round as an example) that the top 16 films are slotted first from Group 1 to Group 16, and the films ranked 17-32 are slotted under them. So, in effect, #1 goes against #17, #2 goes against #18, and so on.

Its amazing how influential Seven Samurai is to cinema, pop culture, and just stories in general. Truly a seminal work of art.

Rashomon was the first movie to film the Sun and its rays. That's pretty significant in and of itself.

I'd say Rashomon is the better film.

I believe I agree with you. I know it won't make it pass this round but when I have introduced people to Kurosawa, I've always started with Rashomon. SS is excellent, of course, but there is something bewitching about Rashomon and it gets my vote.

The poll has closed. Seven Samurai moves on and Rashomon is eliminated.
