I really enjoyed it. It was much more grisly than I expected. Definitely horror. You can tell it's a first novel but I really liked the premise and it had good pace. It was a quick read.

I've been catching up on some of Tom Deady's books and novellas. Very enjoyable stuff. Some Creepshow-type horror vibe. He is a good guy as well. Used to be a member of the old Stephen King forum. I'm reading "The Clearing" at the moment and really enjoying it. You can also order signed copies at: https://www.tomdeady.com/signedbooks

I agree, he's super nice. Have you read Weekend Getaway or Of Men and Monsters? Those are my 2 personal favorites. I still have to pick up The Clearing.

I just finished Of Men and Monsters. A nice read. I read WG a long while ago. Can't remember a whole lot about it but it seemed more hardcore horror (which is fine with me). Everything of Tom's that I have read is good. As an aside, I noted on the old SK forum several years ago that I was reading "Haven" when my daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia (and finished the book during the first months she spent undergoing treatment in the hospital). To my surprise Tom read the post, and he went out of his way to have several Y/A authors send her books. So I'm a big fan.

Wow, that's very cool of him, and I bet that really lifted your daughter's spirits.
