    My 2022 reading:

    1. The Church of Dead Girls by Stephen Dobyns
I bought this many years ago but never read it until last January. Not wildly good, but good enough that I'll eventually need to read more Dobyns.

    2. Understanding Physics Volume I: Motion, Sound & Heat by Isaac Asimov
    3. Understanding Physics Volume II: Light, Magnetism & Electricity by Isaac Asimov
    4. Understanding Physics Volume III: The Electron, Proton & Neutron by Isaac Asimov
Very interesting stuff, but slow to plow through.

    5. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
Even better than her other novel I'd already read (Once Upon A River).

    6. Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco
So frustratingly unsatisfying was this mishmash of ideas that it made me reevaluate my plans to read more Eco (I probably won't). The upside: The Dark Tower series now looks positively straightforward and well-organized by comparison.

    7. Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Good enough that I'm looking forward to the upcoming sequel (Hell Bent, published later this month).

    8. Majestic by Whitley Strieber
    9. The Omen by David Seltzer
    10. Limited Edition of One by Steven Wilson
    11. Limited Edition of One (Supplementary Volume) by Steven Wilson
    12. Tales of the Mysterious and Macabre by Algernon Blackwood
I re-read this because I didn't believe it could possibly have been as dull as I recalled, but boy oh boy, I was right the first time, which is quite a shame, as I very much enjoy Blackwood's classic-era texture and feel, but his stories almost always fail to deliver.

    13. The Best of Elizabeth Hand by Elizabeth Hand
More people should be talking about Elizabeth Hand.

    14. Chasing the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar
I read this so you won't have to! Actually, it wasn't bad at all; I enjoyed it, although the writing seemed a bit Kingish (in a fan fic kind of way, not in a good way) and, although I'm in no hurry, I may yet read more Chizmar.

SS Johnny on the Spot by Frank Belknap Long
SS Expendable by Philip K. Dick
    15. Hobgoblin by John Coyne
    16. A Game in the Sun and Other Stories by John Coyne

A deep-dive into all Hobbit material I have:
    17. The Hobbit
AM The Atlas of Middle-earth (only the section pertaining to The Hobbit) by Karen Wynn Fonstad
    18. The Art of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, Christina Scull, Wayne Hammond
    19. The Annotated Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien & Douglas Anderson
-- The History of The Hobbit (first part of read) by John Rateliff

    A break for October/Halloween/spooky reads:
    20. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
    21. Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty
#21 I found a good deal on a cheap Cemetery Dance edition of this and thought it had to be a winner (I like Blatty's restrained style), but it unfortunately had a pronounced element of goofiness about it that kept it from being what I wanted.
SS The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe
SS The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe
SS Shadow - A Parable by Edgar Allan Poe
SS Silence - A Fable by Edgar Allan Poe
SS The Oval Portrait by Edgar Allan Poe
SS The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar by Edgar Allan Poe
    SS 1408
    22. The House With a Clock in Its Walls by John Bellairs
    23. The Figure in the Shadows by John Bellairs
    24. The Letter, The Witch, and the Ring by John Bellairs
    25. Dracula
My new "seasons" edition! If you haven't heard of the seasons editions (of various classics), do take a look: https://www.thomasnelson.com/blog/20...asons-edition/

The return to complete the Hobbit read:
    26. The History of The Hobbit (remainder of read) by John Rateliff
This was awesome, but at 900+ pages, you really really have to care about The Hobbit for that to be the case (if you hunger for Hobbit background but not 900 pages' worth, do check out The Annotated Hobbit (#19 above)).

    27. A Christmas Carol
    28. Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman
    29. The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman
Both of these had metallic ink (the former, silver; the latter, gold) - quite enjoyable.

    30. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
    31. The Long Slide: Thirty Years in American Journalism by Tucker Carlson

[At this point, I knew I wouldn't be able to finish a new book by year end, and since I prefer not to have books straddle years (the easier to number them on lists such as this, which I always carry in my mind whether or not I type it out here) - although I've done so several times and it really is a silly thing with which to concern one's self) - I thought now was a good time to pull out some shorter items I hadn't read:]

AM The Hobbit 1937 - 2017 by Christina Scull & Wayne Hammond
LN Sonic Temple 30 (album by The Cult)
    LN Tommy (Super Deluxe Edition)
LN The Who Sell Out (Super Deluxe Edition)

    Key for unnumbered items:

    SS = short story
AM = associated material (associated with an accompanying text of some kind)
LN = liner notes (for deluxe CD sets; these are essays and interviews, not credits)
It seems I'm miles above the surface of the Earth

I can see across the whole of London and beyond
