This one could be close. Night of the Living Dead was leading at one point.

This is a really tough one. I wish both could move on. I'll have to think about it for a bit.

Night of the Living Dead has had more of an impact on the world and was one of the first horror films I can recall seeing and will still continue to watch it and enjoy. PotA is also very influential and I love the Twilight Zone-esque ending (I have to believe that was part of Serling's initial screenplay but I haven't read the book so I'm not sure) but seeing a little girl kill and eat her parents? Come on! What's better than that? Also, that NotLD ending is brilliant. The role was written for a white man but they went with a black actor and just said make all the characters simply ignore or not even acknowledge that he is black. This was a genius bit of film making. A movie where the lead/hero was a competent black man? In those days? Without the mention of his race in the film. Still impresses me.

Personal note, this was one of the first movies I showed my nephew because he was already into zombies at a young age. He was as engrossed as I was when I first watched it and he cried at that ending. It's still a very potent film.

Now all the PotA voters can yell at me.

I never read the book but when I was a kid I read a short story "By the Rivers of Babylon". When I saw the Planet of the Apes I thought it was based on that.

I think it was "By the Waters of Babylon" - I teach it in my sophomore English class. Great story. The film though is loosely based on Pierre Boulle's novel, the original title of which is Monkey Planet. He also wrote The Bridge Over the River Kwai, another great film.

You convinced me Tommy, I just voted for Night of the Living Dead. That ending has always stuck with me. I watched an interesting documentary about the making of the film recently. I think it was called Birth of the Living Dead. I'd definitely recommend it if you haven't seen it yet.
