OMG, Woof! I love Catherine Deneuve!!

I recently caught a french film starring her called 8 Women ( 8 Femmes ), directed by François Ozon, from 2002 ... and found it to be so extraordinarily charming.

It's this murder mystery type of deal, and at random points in the movie - they just start singing for no reason what so ever! I don't know how else to describe it. I loved every second!!!!!

If you have room in your Netflix queue - it's worth a watch.

Darren Aronofsky is at the top of living directors.
Stanley Kubrick is my all time favorite.

To suggest that Steven Spielberg has zero complicity with the sales department, or that no director anywhere is any less focused on marketability... I'm sorry, but I could only call that willful ignorance.

Agreed, yet that is not to say that JP is most intriguing of all films to deal with such.

Anyway, you folken don't want to read more long diatribe against commercialist flicks. I'll just let it go with a few instant reviews. These speak for themselves.

Wow, Pathoftheturtle. I'm not sure if you were trying to be cute, in which case you epically failed, but calling Saving Private Ryan "a pity" is just silly.

I'd go almost as far as to say Un-American. I can honestly say I would not trade my taste in film for some of the people on this board. I'm sure they would say the same about me, but I guess that's what makes the world go round.

Jean, to say Jurassic Park is just about dinosaurs is like saying The Birds is just about birds. Jurassic Park is about survival, just like Jaws was. You may not care about dinosaurs, but I don't understand how a bunch of people trying to survive against the largest, most fearsome beasts in the history of the world fails to capture your attention.

I hate to play this card and I'm sure I will receive some flak for this, but maybe you just don't “get” some American movies/directors.

It seems like you not only dislike, but have a severe distaste for some of the more contemporary American directors.

I apologize in advance if you take any offense to that.

This is the very point. I totally failed to see it in JP, but I saw a lot of things in The Birds - even though The Birds is very far from being my favorite Hitchcock. The bunch of people you mentioned seemed to me just a cartoon characters doing some stunts, all situations unbearably cliched; I couldn't care less what happened to those people, and I do not remember any one of them.

I hate to play this card and I'm sure I will receive some flak for this, but maybe you just don't “get” some American movies/directors.
Why would you hate to play this card? It makes perfect sense. I really, truly don't get some of them; actually, most of them and, if we're talking about last decade or two, I am afraid I have to say almost all of them. I don't see why this would offend a bear, since it is the plain truth.

It seems like you not only dislike, but have a severe distaste for some of the more contemporary American directors.

No offense, it's the truth itself speaking with your mouth! Cross my heart and hope to die, I swear I do have a severe distaste for Spielberg, Tarantino, Jackson, Lukas and some others.

It's probably not that they are bad. It may as well be that bears are flawed. I was born among European cinema (East and West), and breastfed with it. I love American classic, though, as I said, and Hitchcock, Capra (my nominee here), Koster (another my nominee, if nobody beat me to it, - don't remember), Cukor, Lumet, Curtiz, and many more will be forever my favorites.

Probably because they knew how to frame a shot, among other things.

    ETA:

calling Saving Private Ryan "a pity" is just silly.
No, it isn't. It is a matter of taste, and taste is based, entre autre, on cinematic and other experience, which is different for all people. I am afraid I concur.

Ask not what bears can do for you, but what you can do for bears. (razz)

Path, you can insult me all you want. I won't be reduced to doing the same. You know that's not what I meant in my statement. Besides, Jean agreed.

You don't know me, and I don't know you (thankfully it seems.)

You're nothing more than a Times New Roman font to me.

It seems I won’t be able to have a logical conversation with you. That’s fine though because I don’t think I want to have a conversation with somebody who thinks Saving Private Ryan is “a pity.”

Jean - it seems that you have a severe distaste for modern American directors just because they're ... modern American directors. This may or not may not be true, but that's what it seems like to me.

I don't know. Right at the moment I see no logic in what you're saying, but since I've known you for a long time, I assume that there must be some, and quite sound, at that (unlike, regrettably, what is happening at the moment between Still Servant and Mike).

I would like you to do two things, if possible:

    1. Make it clear to me who "modern American directors" are. I like and immensely respect Kubrick (RIP), I adore Lynch, love the Coens and am very interested in Aronofsky. Whom did I miss?
    2. Move this discussion somewhere it could be proceeded without the fear that after the contest is over all conversation is gone, ok? Might be just General Movie Discussion, or Your Favorite Directors, one of the standing threads.

Path, Jean proved my point. He agreed that there is some American cinema that he just doesn't "get".

I can admit that there are some foreign films that are considered great cinema that I just don't really "get". I feel that being raised in a certain environment could be a direct reason why some films work and some films don't work for people.

If a person is not from the country where the film is made/takes place, it's entirely possible that something might get lost in translation. I don't really see why that is completely impossible.

My other problem with you is how you basically said that Pam is wasting her time watching movies in another thread. You can't see how that statement can come off as being rude?

Pam is one of the nicest people on this site. I think a different choice of words might have been better.

You seem to get very little enjoyment from watching movies, yet you are very active in a forum dedicated to film. If you think watching movies that might not be very good as a waste of time, discussing film in general must be a huge waste of time to you.

Seems kind of hypocritical to me.

So perhaps Gilliam really is the better director and you are out of touch?
I do think that it's important to realize our natural limitations; we can use the realization to try to expand our horizons. The opinons of people who have different perspectives should not be treated as irrelevant. They just might see things you don't.
On the topic of Favorite Directors, I think what I just asked feeve is something that you need to face as well: how is it that the burden of proof falls automatically to those who do not like who you happen to like?

As for what I said on another thread, it might be better to discuss on that thread. This one is still not called "All of Your Problems with Me." What I was talking to Pam about was myself, my own feelings. I certainly do hope that she understood that better than you have.
There's a big difference between hypocrisy and indecision. I'm probably going to talk about no longer being completely sure whether watching and working on movies is worth doing or not until I make up my mind. If you're determined to get me to quit talking about films, you need only convince me that the artform contributes little to personality development. Not bad so far.

I never said that because people don't agree with me their opinion is irrelevant.

I'm fully aware that an opinion can't be wrong. It's an opinion. I have no problem if somebody thinks Gilliam is a better director than SS. I disagree, but that doesn't mean I'm right or they are wrong.

I never said that. I'm not sure why you even thought I said that.

This whole thing started because you called Saving Private Ryan "a pity". Not once have you addressed why you feel that way. Were you just trying to be funny? I guess we will never know. I happen to love the film. Seeing somebody who thinks it's that bad, makes me wonder why they feel that way.

By the way, my personality is just fine. Can you honestly say the same about yours?

I'm literally the easiest person to get along with. Kudos. You've changed that.

Friends, this is not me speaking as a mod/facilitator, but just as a friend I'll ask that we keep this thread to discussing/debating who we like and why and if y'all have any personal issues with each other that y'all attempt (or not) to resolve those amongst yourselves privately. I personally know both of y'all are really great people so I hope you will, but please let's not do that here openly on the boards.

Fine with me, Brice. If he just answered why he dislikes Saving Private Ryan so much we would have stayed on topic and never have gotten into this disagreement in the first place.

Instead, he decided to post a sarcastic comment about a perfectly valid point I was trying to make. His response (to me) seemed antagonistic in nature. It's possible I just don't know him well enough and he was trying to be playful.

    I'm not sure.

    I certainly did, no worries.

Staying on Topic - I definitely would list Spielberg as a favorite director of mine. He has had some mis-steps, as have almost every director, but in general he's been amazingly consistent with his work.
