I'm a big fan of Saulnier's. I've enjoyed all his films so far. I've been meaning to start putting together a running list of directors.
I'd like to add Gareth Evans to this list. He did a great job with the two Raid films and I thought Apostle was underrated. He just finished a TV series, so I'm looking forward to what he has coming up next.

I still haven't watched any Jeremy Saulnier.
I'm pretty fond of Jim Mickle too. Stake Land is solid and Cold in July was too.

I thought of that since it is maybe his masterpiece BUT I think Thin Red Line is much more accessible for rookies that may not know what they are getting into. Thin Red Line is a little mainstream with a lot of Malick and Tree of Life rates a zero on the mainstream meter and 100% Malick in all his glory (which a lot people HATE)
or you could say Badlands may be the best place to start because well. . . It is his start.

As for Alps, check out Kanopy or Hoopla. They are both free apps through your local library. Tons of great films for free. Your library might have them. You will have to check. I requested my library get Hoopla and a week later they did. Don't forget, they work for us.

"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King
Being stuck in the house has some advantages. It means I can sit down and do something like this. This is the best I could do. I wanted a way to keep track of directors as new ones come along, and I also wanted a way for people to vote so we can see how popular etc. This list can be edited by anyone, so feel free to add directors.

Alfred Hitchcock has always been my fave. He is, "the Master of Suspense".
I'm sure he has been brought up before but Scott Cooper is 4 for 4 on his films right now with Antler coming soon.
Crazy Heart
Out of the Furnace
Black Mass
Hostiles
Pretty good start!

I love the "art movie" and a good ol' slow burn but definitely a certain beauty in the "genre" director. A few I love and a couple of their less obvious films:
Walter Hill - Crossroads, Johnny Handsome
John Carpenter- Star Man, Christine
Wes Craven- Red Eye, People Under the Stairs
Clint Eastwood- High Plains Drifter, Bird
Sam Peckinpah- Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, Pat Garret and Billy the Kid
