Me too. I'm surprised I haven't seen more. There's been a couple on my to-watch list for awhile now, and there's some big ones that I still have yet to see because they never interested me.

    I'm mortified.

I can't believe I forgot to nominate Bang the Drum Slowly. One of my favorite sports movies. This is going to bother me for a long time.

The results are in! This shouldn't come as a surprise, but the 70s were dominated by men (especially white men). There were only a few women who appeared in multiple movies that made the list.

This 70s list is probably not as comprehensive as other lists. I know film pretty well, but there are a lot of smaller actors who probably appeared in a bunch of films that I'm not exactly familiar with. Basically, don't expect to see a lot of character actors on here. If there's somebody that you love that's missing, let me know and I would be happy to look him or her up.

As was mentioned previously, Clint Eastwood was the big winner in the 70s, appearing in a staggering 14 films in our tournament! Somewhat surprisingly, the actor with the second most films was Donald Sutherland with 8. Two Jaws alum both had a great decade Robert Shaw and Roy Scheider both logged 7 films. Compiling this list made me sad for two Hollywood legends whose stars have faded. Dustin Hoffman made 6 films that will appear in the tournament and Gene Hackman had 7.

I always use this as a trivia question, so this is a perfect place to mention it, but John Cazale appeared in just 5 feature films in his career before passing away at the age of 42. All 5 films were nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Pretty amazing.

As for the ladies, Madeline Kahn and Diane Keaton tied with 6 films. Both racked up most of their films by working with the same director. Keaton with Woody Allen and Kahn with Mel Brooks.

I added a new section at the bottom that lists actors who have appeared in each decade for the tournaments we have held so far. There are a few surprising names on that list.

Other actors logging 5 films or more

    Robert Duvall - 6
    Ned Beatty - 6
    Jack Nicholson - 6
    Al Pacino - 6
    Gene Wilder - 5
    Harvey Keitel - 5
    Randy Quaid - 5
    Harrison Ford - 5
    Ryan O'Neal - 5
    Robert Redford - 5

List of actors who have appeared in a film for each of our tournaments.

    Robert De Niro
    Laurence Fishburne
    Alan Arkin
    Christopher Plummer
    Jeff Bridges
    Ian Holm
    Michael Douglas
    Nick Nolte
    Bill Murray
    Hal Holbrook
    John Hurt
    Ed Harris
    Sigourney Weaver
    Albert Brooks

Wow, that was quick! Thank you! Always fascinating and 14 films for Eastwood? Whoa...

Also, really cool to see Jodie Foster with 4 movies.

You're welcome! I basically spent the last few nights doing it while watching TV.

It's such a fun and illuminating exercise. One thing that is very apparent was the clear changing of the guard. So many of the actors in the 70s gave way to a new crop of young actors that we saw in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. Then with the last tournament, we saw that changing of the guard again. Very interesting.

Yup, I truly am so grateful for your work with this. Once we are done with all ten decades of movies, this will be the most definitive list of a century of film ever!

John Cazale happens to be a guilty favorite actor of mine so I think I know this one:

    The Deer Hunter
    The Godfather
    The Godfather Pt II
    The Conversation
    Dog Day Afternoon

He also appeared in one TV episode of N.Y.P.D. I think he also did some theater, but I do not know what if any plays he was in. He always played the sorta sad sack/Odd Man out but man was he good at it. lol

Yes, sad. I had though of it but I mistakenly thought is was a tv movie, much like Brian's Song was.

I forgot Alice, Sweet Alice and Shivers too. Lotta unique horror flicks in the 70s.
