A word about Raiders: when it came out, I was 12 and my cousin (pretty much my best friend) was 9. I seem to recall the ads all mentioned how big of a deal it was that the guy behind Jaws and the guy behind Star Wars were getting together for this great big epic thing. For some reason, I have always hated being told something was a classic (tell me it's good, tell me to buy it/see it, but don't tell me it's going to be one of the best things ever - I know this isn't rational, but I'm still this way), so these ads rubbed me the wrong way.

But: my cousin saw Raiders first and assured me it was the real deal, so I went to see it with him, and it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen. There was a small 2-screen theater one town over from us, and we went on to see it around a dozen times. For a long time it was my favorite movie, it's still one of my tops, and there's still nothing like the scene that begins with Indy on horseback chasing the Nazi truck convoy. Nothing.
Eastasia has always taught college students to feel pride or shame according to their race.
