Yeah that is James. I haven't heard from him in quite some time. I tried reaching out but never got a reply. Glad to see he is still out there.

Knowing Darkness: Artists Inspired by Stephen King~~Slipcased

    $310 BIN with free shipping.

I know a lot of folks here already have this, but if you don't and are looking, this is a good price. Especially considering it's free shipping and this is an expensive one to ship.

I am not sure I would go with a good price... You can get these for $200 if you look. I remember when you could buy them for $80 bucks signed from George!

The last publicly available sales I have in my Centipede Press spreadsheet are: $388, $389, $400, $350, $400, $450 (in that order, with the last sale in September 2019), but I'm also not on the FB groups! Shipping usually adds about $40 to the cost of this one.

I'm not sure why but this book has been moving pretty regularly for the past year or so - I see about a sale a month (not my sales).

I got my copy from George for ~$100 in 2013, with his nice gold signature!

Mostly from eBay but a few from some ABE sellers. I miss a lot of those though because there's no way to go back and double check... But this title has been moving a lot in the last year or so. There was even a rebound version from the original book block (Jerad sold a few of those, too) that went for almost $800!

I tend to think that eBay sales (not listings!) give a good idea of market price, because it's so accessible and popular and worldwide. But with the rise of individual selling on places like FB or Instagram there's some mismatch because if you are on one of those and don't pay attention to eBay prices, it's very possible that you could pay less (or more) than the price you could find it for on eBay. And conversely, on eBay (and ABE) only, you're probably less likely to find as good of a bargain as you could on FB at times, both because of the seller's fees (which set a floor price), and because obvious examples of underpriced eBay auctions will last literally seconds or minutes, at most (think of the numbered Misery that went for ~$2000 when there had already been multiple transactions in the ~$4000 range, or, better example, the signed Talisman upthread that lasted less than an hour). So overall I'd expect to find more "bargains" if you know how to find them on FB/IG, and less on eBay. The difference is that not everyone is in the right groups or knows the right people on FB/IG, whereas eBay is a huge and easily accessible open marketplace.

I haven't joined FB, and the only thing that even tempts me a little is when I hear that there are good deals on books I like over there...

I have been out of the scene for quite sometime but is this not a bit expensive for even a F/F copy of this book?

Nope. I just bought the book itself for $400 and paid $1000 for one with a flawless jacket. So I’ll be $1400 into my AS NEW VERY FINE copy. Doubleday is anyone’s guess on value lately. I only need a fine Salem’s and would pay handsomely for it. More than most believe is retail here.

I'm curious as to how folks thinks the Folio book compares to the other signed bookplate editions. It looks like there are 200 unnumbered copies of The Shining, The Insomnia UK S/L has 200 numbered bookplates, and both Rose Madder and Desperation have 250 numbered copies. There never seemed to be a lot of love for those other bookplate editions, so what about the Folio edition make it more desirable to you? Is it because it is The Shining? Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are.

They stated there is only 100 of these and it’s a favourite of kings which I think is driving the price of this one.

The book itself is quite nice too, with colour illustrations and such. The UK S/Ls - as much as I like them - have the same contents as the UK trade editions.

The thing that drove the price up for this book was the fact it was originally only available through a 'prize draw' - you could not buy directly like the other books you mention. Very few copies appeared on the open market (and we may have an answer now to why that was) so low supply drove very high demand.
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King

I won one of the signed books during the original Folio prize draw. It was fine, but I already had Lettered editions from SubPress and CD. The signature was a flat-sign on a bookplate that had been stuck onto a front page. Nothing wrong with it, but left me with an image of King sitting with a stack of stickers and never touching the books. Not my cup of tea. So I moved it on thru David at Betts. Thing is, back then there were pretty much none on the market yet it only garnered about $500. Kudos to whoever bought it back when the market wasn't certain how much to quantify value.
Alright, we'll call it a draw.

I kind of feel like I am about to burst a bubble for you....but you do know that in most cases....King never actually touches the books......right? Instead of a bookplate......he is (in most cases) signing a unbound signature page.

The bookplate is just a smaller version of the signature page.
