thank you. i think it was an ok movie, but certainly not on par with Goodfellas. i understand it won awards as a make up to Scorcese for a lifetime of being overlooked, but the fan reaction i don't get. by the time i saw it, it was made out to be something it was most assuredly not. good, not great. def not scorcese's best.

His story is interesting and all but what do you find so great about The Departed?

It had good performances, well directed, had a great soundtrack and for those who haven't seen Infernal Affairs is was quite good and original for us. It's a great story but I can't compare versions. Do I think it deserved best picture? No, but it was a long deserved nod to Scorsese in an otherwise slow year for Oscar Calibre Movies.

I always give mega props to James Badge Dale (Chase Edmunds from 24) for that movie. What a great movie to get your face into, all the massive names in the movie.

Performances were okay. Direction? Eh. I've seen a lot better, I've seen a lot worse. It just wasn't special.

I haven't seen The Departed, but I find Scorcese to be somewhat overrated in general.

No stones will be thrown from me. While I'm a big fan of Goodfellas and Casino, I don't think hes the best director ever.

The Departed just didn't live up to the hype at all. The only character I actually enjoyed was Mark Wahlberg's and it wasn't much more than a cameo.

Anybody seen the British film Layer Cake?

It was the directorial debut for Matthew Vaughn and among the first major roles for Daniel Craig. I thought it was excellent. Certainly not the "best mob movie ever" but a very well done organized crime movie.

I'd never even heard of it. I'll have to pick up a copy eventually though. I love mob movies.

It's an entertaining two hours with some very good performances. I'd like to pick up the book it's adapted from (also of the same title). The screenplay was written by the author.

    You're welcome.

Vaughn showed me that he learned some good things from producing Guy Ritchie's movies, and managed to make his own film that while it has elements of Guy's style is still wholly individual and not just an imitation of Guy. It's definitely not comedic like Guy's movies, but it does have some humorous elements to it.

What impressed me almost as much as Vaughn's direction is the performance of Daniel Craig. I have not seen either of the Bond films that he's done (they aren't really the kind of films I enjoy) so this was my first exposure to his acting. I thought he was quite good. Without seeing the Bond films, I can see where he'd make an excellent Bond.

In general, I think fans of organized crime films would enjoy it. It's not the Italian mafia, but British and Serbian organized crime outfits.

Maybe "great" is an exaggeration. The film (series) it's based upon, Internal Affairs, is actually more interesting to watch, but I still think it's a very good movie, and I say this as someone who thinks Matt Damon is the most obnoxious person in Hollywood next to his boyfriend, Ben Affleck. The score is also very well-done.

I still think this is the greatest mob movie though:

This is another one that I've been meaning to check out but haven't gotten around to yet. Some of my friends recommended it to me awhile back because they said it had a similar style to Lock Stock and Snatch. Is this the only film that this guy has directed or has he done others since?

As far as I know Heather it is Vaughn's only film to date. He produced Lock, Stock and Snatch, but this was his first directorial film.

Thanks Jayson. I had actually wondered if he had anything to do with those films (until I saw your previous post), because I remember arguing with my friends because they had insisted that this film was actually directed by Guy Ritchie.

Well then you win that argument. Guy had nothing whatsoever to do with this film other than that he and Matthew Vaughn are friends.

Vaughan's gonna direct the upcoming film adaptation of the comic Kick-Ass. It looks really excellent.

My vote for best mob movie would be either Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs.

This is going to be shocking, but I could not get into that film for the life of me. My friend let me borrow it and I fell asleep like three times. I did finish watching it though.

I will never abandon a movie no matter how bad it is. It's just not in my nature.

Also, Ruthful, how is Matt Damon the most obnoxious person in Hollywood? I love Matt Damon. He's my favorite actor. He always seems humble and down to earth. He has no high profile tabloid relationships. Just because he's friends with Ben Affleck, that makes him obnoxious?

    Seems unfair.
