The Great Movie Tournament - 2000s: Round 1 - Group 4 of 32
During the first round of The Great Movie Tournament, please vote for up to six films you would like to move onto the next round. The top six films will be moving on. Keep in mind that the percentage of the vote a given film receives will determine its standing going forward.
The poll will run for seven days. Discussion is greatly encouraged!
The nominees are (please let me know if any video doesn't play for you):
I have a love/hate relationship with Enter the Void. It's both fascinating and infuriating at the same time. I appreciated my time with it but I couldn't wait for it to be over. Maybe I need to give it a rewatch, it's been years.

Two signs of great art. The very worst thing a movie can be in my opinion is boring and EtV is definitely not boring.
Must admit the trailer looked good, but unless I can find it free on Amazon Prime, Netflix or Spectrum on demand, not inclined to go out of my way to watch it.

Don't get Hulu, and I think I checked Prime last night. I think it was a PPV movie. I did watch the Illusionist on Prime (with commercials so I could see it free)
Ok, thats it! I am not watching any more movies based on people pushing them. Watched Hard Candy last night. The movie made me feel icky and uncomfortable the whole way through. (I can't believe I just used the word icky, but can't think of a better word).
Spoiler:
Honestly at times I was rooting for the pedophile to escape, and that is just wrong. Was that the intention of the film makers, or are we supposed to be rooting for Hayley the whole way through? All in all, I just want to wipe this movie from my memory.

That spoiler is what makes it such a crazy, fucked up movie. Honestly, I don't know what to do with that one either.

I felt the painful parts of the movie were designed to make the viewer squirm, and make a person uncomfortable with pedophilia (obviously easy to do), but also wondering what degree of revenge is acceptable.
It sounds simple and easy to say "that pedophile should have his balls cut off", but watching it done (real or not), isn't so simple and easy.

That seems kind of drastic. There are some people here with some great taste. You'd be robbing yourself of some great movies.
Just because one film wasn't to your liking doesn't mean you won't love the next one.
Also, your assessment of Hard Candy is exactly how you're supposed to feel after watching it.
I understand that that was their intent, but I don't like to watch movies that make me come away with (only) such negative emotions, there really was no uplifting moments in the movie. I guess after thinking about it, some of the things that prevented if from being a good movie in my mind were
Spoiler:
1) the protagonist (I can't call her the hero), never seems to grow or change during the course of the movie, The pedophile seems to have more growth then her 2) she never seems to have doubts about what she is doing (except when she is just toying with him).
I will concede that the movie is "well done", but in my eyes that doesn't make it a good movie, if you aren't glad you watched it after wards. Having said that, I recognize that there are dark movies that don't have much or any uplifting moments in them that I do like (the Mist for example), but they are generally horror movies, which require a lot of suspension of disbelief going in.
The comment about not watching other movies was somewhat tongue in cheek. But having said that, a lot of the comments about movies getting low votes or "needs more love" often come off as elitist. Sometimes I feel like I am being given homework assignments or being shammed for not having seen it. But to be honest, I am perfectly fine with sticking to "mainstream" movies. And I definitely don't feel like I am being robbed of great movies. I see enough good movies or TV shows to keep me satisfied and not feel like I need to seek out more. (in fact I currently have dozens of hours of tv shows to catch up on on either DVR or Netflix watch list, and the fall tv season isn't too far away)
I have watched two movies based on trailers and comments in these threads. The other was the Illusionist, which I am 90% sure I saw before. I did like it, and am glad that I had forgotten most of it, because, although good, it loses it rewatch value if you know whats going to happen. I didn't vote for it because I had already voted on that poll before I (re)watched it, but would vote for it in the next round (likely). I'll have to look through the list to see if there are any others, but it would likely have to be a movie I had wanted to see in the past but just didn't for some reason or other.
