Yeap, the 70's for me too, with maybe the 90's right behind it.
It's funny because while there are a handful of films I love in this decade, overall I've been struggling in this tournament. I love older films, and I love the 80s onward, but the 70s seem to be a gap for me.

Is it just movies you don't particularly like, or just haven't seen yet?

Hear me out: Once we are done with all our tournaments, we take all the films that didn't make it into our tournaments and do a Best of the Rest Tournament.

A lot of movies I haven't seen, but I also have no desire to watch those. I did watch a couple I hadn't seen previously, even one that has been on my list forever, but honestly didn't really care for them.

The 70's was a unique period of time for films. It was the decade of film that reflected milestones in American culture; things like the Vietnam war (and its impact on American psyche), the civil rights movement, class and race wars, a sexual revolution etc.,

This is the decade film makers started moving away from the Hollywood mold and started telling tales that were more daring, more pessimistic, bolder.

I could argue that the 70s is when we truly started to see the medium turn into an art form.

Interestingly, The Godfather was in 20th place after Round 2. After Round 5 it's in 3rd. Speilberg also has two movies in the top 4 and Friedkin two in the top 16.

I think I have watched more movies that I had not already seen for this tournament than all of the rest of the tournaments combined. Unfortunately, some were after the movies were eliminated, like Papillon and Network. Watching The Last Picture Show makes me mad that it was eliminated already.

I also have rewatched several. Alien was on just last night (and was followed by Aliens so I did not get enough sleep.)

I look at it as the battle of the 1976 Oscars - Jaws, Cuckoo's Nest, Barry Lyndon, Dog Day Afternoon, and Nashville - holy crap what a line up. I watched it and was so disappointed when Jaws lost. At least John Williams won. Now comes the payback!

And so we are down to our last four movies of the 1970s! Thank you, everyone, once again, for such great participation and diligence! As we wind down the 1970s, and then take a month-long break, we will be back with our next decade of voting: the 1960s! It's never too early to start building your lists, so I'll drop some food for thought links below:

    And the final four:

    3. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 519.71%
    4. Rocky 494.50%

The Godfather dropped from second down to fourth. Will it get back to second? Or first?

As mentioned above, our next tournament is the 1960s. But I wanted to do a quick informal poll as to how many potential voters we may have for the following decades. I know and realize that classic movies aren't everyone's cup of tea. And I know a few of you have been waiting patiently until we hit the black-and-white! The participation thus far has been amazing, with an average of 25 votes or so. If you go back to the top of the first post of this thread, you'll see our plan for the rest of the tournament, and once we're done with the 1960s, next year we'll do the 1950s and the 1940s, and in 2023 we'll finish off with the 1930s and the 1920s (when some of those nominated films will be celebrating their 100th anniversaries!).

So I would love to know, how many of you that have been voting so far, are likely to continue participating in some or all five of the remaining decades (1960s, '50, '40s, '30s, '20)? Details are to be determined, but I imagine at some point we will shrink the number of nominations and potentially the structure of the tournament. But if there are no people to nominate and vote for these movies, there's no tournament. I feel like if we can get even a core group of about a dozen, we should be able to finish off this entire crazy idea. Remember, that once we complete all ten decades, all the winners will face off with one another to choose the best of the best!

Sorry, but I really like that film.
I was just joshing. Citizen Kane losing Best Picture to How Green Was My Valley is one of the great travesties of the Academy Awards. Along with Goodfellas losing to Dances with Wolves, Saving Private Ryan losing to Shakespeare in Love, Brokeback Mountain losing to Crash, etc. Come to think of it, there have been a lot of travesties in the Academy Awards! But Citizen Kane losing Best Picture may be the worst.
Alright, we'll call it a draw.
