There are obviously some really great films on here. The one that stands out for me that I tell people about all the time is Ace in the Hole.

I feel like that film is incredibly timely for our current world, which is pretty impressive considering it was made in the 50s. I urge everyone to check that one out.

As for which film will win, I'd be shocked if a Hitchcock film doesn't take it.

My pick would be Rear Window. I can also see Kurosawa taking it. There are no locks, I don't think. Could be a number of great films (12 Angry Men?).

Hmmmm, my guess falls in the category of "none of the above."

Can't wait to get started! There were some amazing films made in the 50s.

Agree. I hope this one makes it far. Along with Paths of Glory.

My guess is Hitchcock will take it cause he's the most well known director among most here and his films have climatic, energetic moments. Rear Window or Vertigo, both will most likely be in the Semis.

Hitchcock with ten great movies certainly has the deck stacked, but it could also be another genius movie, there were plenty this decade: Rebel Without a Cause, Singin' in the Rain, A Streetcar Named Desire... In fact, looking over the future brackets for Round 1 now, I'm having a hard time not voting for something in almost every case...

He almost had another 1950 film. I went to nominate Rope, but then realized it was 1949.

Well there was also I Confess (1953) which we did not nominate. But ten Hitchcocks is plenty. And Rope is actually one of my favorites of the 1940s so I'll be hoping it too goes far in that tournament, coming up next.

I have I Confess on laserdisc but haven't watched it. I feel like it's one of the least known Hitchcock films. It does star Montgomery Clift, who I really like.

I Confess is serviceable but coming from Hitch, it's a lesser work. Although, there is always something a little amusing about seeing a queer play a person of faith.

It's one of the Hitchcock's that I don't believe I've seen. I really need to rectify that. He's got some great films from the 40s (my personal favorite is in that bunch) and I imagine some of those will go far as well.

Any fan of Hitch is likely to like it but I do wish a stronger film had come from the Clift/Hitchcock pairing.

Hitchcock already won the 1960s. It's possible he'll win the 1950s. How likely do we think he could win the 1940s as well?

It's quite possible. He's got some good films in that era as well. I think Orsen Welles might have a shot of winning the 40s too though.

Just (re?)watched 12 Angry Men a week ago. I think we had to watch it in highschool. For some reason I thought Jack Klugman played the part that Henry Fonda played. Definitely should go far.

With her leading all actors in nominated films in our 1950s tournament that has just gotten underway, I thought this was a very timely video, even though it's focused on The Misfits, which made our 1960s tournament:
