Some of my favs are the blockbusters that most would have seen (Tarantino, Fury Road, Hereditary, Kingsman, John Wick, Blade Runner, La La Land, etc.). But for some that might fall through the cracks, I would recommend catching up with:

The Babadook (2014), dir. Jennifer Kent
    Prisoners (2013), dir. Denis Villeneuve
I Saw the Devil (2010), dir. Kim Jee-woon
Life of Pi (2012), dir. Ang Lee
The Handmaiden (2016), dir. Park Chan-wook
The Gentlemen (2019), dir. Guy Ritchie
The Artist (2011), dir. Michel Hazanavicius
Silver Linings Playbook (2012), dir. David O. Russell
How to Train Your Dragon (2010), dir. Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois
Horrible Bosses (2011), dir. Seth Gordon
Uncut Gems (2019), dir. Josh and Benny Safdie
Easy A (2010), dir. Will Gluck
A Girl at My Door (2014), dir. July Jung

I've seen you mention this film several times throughout the years, so I'll make this one of my weekend films.

Setting aside some of the bigger films I know most people have seen, these would be some of my favorites. It was really hard to narrow it down and they're in no particular order.

    It Follows
    Song of the Sea
    Black Swan
    Hunt for the Wilderpeople
    The Babadook
I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House
    Goodnight Mommy
    Brooklyn
    The Nice Guys
    Her
Only the gentle are ever really strong.

Once you look at 8-16, there are some big swingers there.

Spielberg, Scorsese, Eastwood, and Allen are sure to grab some more in the 70s, which speaks to their longevity as directors. An interesting list to process. Thanks for putting it together.

When you take into consideration the critical and mainstream success of Spielberg, is it safe to say that he is the greatest director of all-time?

Probably the most famous, but certainly not the greatest.

I would say he would be in the conversation as greatest of all time. His longevity alone shows how he has been able to tap into the zeitgeist of so many decades, which is not an easy thing to manage. Not many directors can lay claim to this feat. What other directors might we offer up as "greatest" ?

While Spielberg isn't my favorite, he is definitely the greatest. He's created so many iconic images that no director can touch. And not iconic for people of a certain era or taste, but society itself of all time periods since they came out. He revolutionized film in various ways and, unlike any other director, can capture that ineffable "movie magic" seemingly at will.

What really seals it for me is how effortlessly he can go from mainstream popcorn genre flick to affecting, well-crafted drama. Who else could've made Jurassic Park and Schindler's List back-to-back?

Spielberg is one of the most talented, yet also at times, one of the laziest directors in Hollywood. For someone who is capable of creating masterpieces such as Schindler's List, Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Saving Private Ryan; he also farts out shit like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (which practically killed the franchise) and Jurassic Park 2 which is so bad it has more plot holes than swiss cheese.

If you want a director whose influence and talent has literally defined cinema for the past 80+ years, look no further than Alfred Hitchcock. He is by far, the greatest director of all time.

The greatest director of all time is Akira Kurosawa.

Spielberg might win "the most funnest" b/c he does play up for a good time at a Saturday matinee, but I'd bet even he'd tell you he's no Kurosawa.

However, one could make the argument that this will be the last tournament for a while in which we see a turn out like this. The other decades are packed with some truly amazing films, but there just aren't going to be as many people itching to get their films nominated. There are quite a few 60s films that I adore, but I can't put together a list of 300 films like I did for the 90s. Of course, I continue to watch films from older decades, but I won't be able to watch them fast enough.

I could be wrong, but we have to really enjoy this tournament and the member response that will come along with it.

Jean! Hopefully the list for the 2010s decade is to your liking and we didn’t miss too many big ones in your opinion. Voting will start on the 27th so I hope you’ll be able to join in!

Easily one of the greatest. Among my favorites are (in no particular order): The Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, The Hidden Fortress, Kagemusha, Rashamon, and Kagemusha. Toshiro Mifune is certainly a large contributor to Kurosawa's success and vice versa, much like Dinero, and now DiCaprio, are to Scorsese.

Hitchcock would probably be my pick for greatest director. He made so many great films that spanned many decades, even starting off in the silent film era.

I'd also put Orson Welles up there as well. He might not of made as many films but what he contributed to film is undeniable.
