The story is set "in a future America" according to the first sentence on the original paperback.

If it reads "..all-too-near future..." then I would argue that the story is always intended to be in the reader's future regardless of when read. So you could argue (today) this story takes place in the 2030's. This avoids the embarrassment of 2015 rolling around without flying cars, if you catch my drift. Its been 35ish years since I read it, so don't remember how much detail on the year was given.

Also, it seems to reason that a races population will not be evenly distributed, so if one member of a race is in a diner it is reasonable to expect more.

It takes place in a world that has an April 31 -- which is mentioned three times.

It takes place in a world where there is an "April 31st backout".

That's a slang for some way to back out of the "Walk". Not an actual calendar date. It means before May 1st.

I am not adding many books to my collection anymore but did pick up the new edition of The Long Walk. Beautiful production with really nice dimensions and weight. I think the 500 copies will vanish into permanent collection pretty quickly. So glad I picked it up.

I agree. It's the book of the year for me so far. Adding to the gorgeous production details is the importance of the work itself, in King's canon: his first novel (proper) written, and- still one of his best. The CP edition is an important book on anyone's shelf. Hope he gets to do more.

I'm just curious how he got to do this one, given King's post-Salem's Lot behavior (I suppose small publishers can't be choosy, but I'd never have dealt with him again).

With CD, I am patient because I knew how they operated before buying (like buying a long term bond: pay now, get something in several years).

...with several years being the earliest for a return on investment! That said, I don't think anyone expected the complete and utter mismanagement of The Doubleday Years. Pandemic or not, totally unacceptable. CD should have worked out an arrangement with Brian to finish them. Had that been the case The Stand and Pet Semetary would likely be on our shelves by now.

Add in the capped slipcase and it was like opening a Russian doll to get to the actual book.
