Just finished reading The Time Machine. Between the texture of the boards, the feel of the letterpress, the wonderful art, and the style of the writing--it really was like traveling back through time. The story was more straightforward than I remembered it. But no less thought-provoking. My favorite part was the short story that inspired the longer work--The Chronic Argonauts. That was such a treat and I'd say even better than the work it spawned. I'm so glad I read it. Great stuff. Looking forward to the rest of the Wells books.

It was awesome. Also, the revised Chapter 11 (The Grey Man) was better than the version that made it into the collected serial that became The Time Machine. So cool to have that included.

The name Nebogipfel is an amalgam of “Nebo”, referring to the biblical mountain of the same name, and the German word “gipfel” which means summit.

However, the name Nebogipfel has a much deeper significance within the Chronic Argonauts:

In the story, having already referred to himself as an “ugly duckling” and isolated from his fellow men, Nebogipfel states that he is “a man born out of my time” and that his only hope is in the future. As an “Anachronic Man", Nebogipfel sees the future as a Promised Land.

So just like the Hebrew prophet Moses in the Book of Exodus, who viewed “The Promised Land” from the summit of Mount Nebo, H.G. Wells created the name “Moses Nebogipfel” to signify the Promised Land of the future.
