W&G $80-$99
How does condition of a book and/or slipcase factor into it's price/value? Obviously, F/F is 100% but what does some marks/scratches/dings do to it's price? Is it all subject to the book itself (and it's rarity) or do you guys have a system for figuring out the price?
I think it's up to the buyer. There seems to be a pretty active slip case market where by you might be able to source an original replacement cover. If the book is damaged its a different story I guess. I think pretty much anything is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay?
More of an example than an answer, i recently got a copy of Insomina GE for a very good price, in part due to a damaged slipcase.
I then contacted Zeising Books and got a replacement slipcase for $15 and free shipping. Now it's all good as new.
Some slipcases are difficult or nearly impossible to replace (still trying to find a replacment case for my Stephen King Universe), but with some patience and creativity, it can be done. I would not hesitate to buy a F/F with a less than perfect slipcase if it was an item I really wanted.
"Thanks, but no, it isn't a cowboy hat. It's a fedora. And yes, Indianna Jones is still socially relevant."
A fine book in a fine dustjacket in a fine slipcase is obviously the best.
Any damage to any of the three will devalue the item.
The slipcase or dustjacket might be replaceable. So damage to a slipcase or dustjacket is often a more minor flaw than damage to the book itself. A damaged book is often ignored by a large segment of collectors who are looking for fine items.
The rarity and desirability of the book are definitely factors. Everything is subjective.
The market changes constantly and so you need to be paying attention. For more common items you can look at recent sales of comparable items. Adjust the price for differences in condition. Less common items are more volatile. If you pay attention constantly then you will start to notice trends. In the end the price is what the market will bear at the time of sale.
"One day you're going to figure out that everything they taught you was a lie."
