    :caution: SPAM IN PMs-PLEASE READ

    Hi everyone,

    There has recently been some spam going out in private messages to members of the site. I know that twenty people received messages of this type on Thursday.

    This is absolutely unacceptable, and the staff apologizes for the nuisance. If you received one of the twenty sent on Thursday, then that has been addressed.

    But now I suspect that more have been sent. If ANYONE has received a spam-like PM since Friday afternoon then please report it to me via PM. I will need the name of the user who sent the message, time it was sent, and a copy of the message's content.

    We do not have the capability to read member PMs or even see who someone has sent a PM to, so our success in protecting the members of the site from spam is entirely up to all of you. If we know about it we can deal with it; so please PM me if you received one anytime between yesterday afternoon and today. Likewise, if you receive any such message in the future please report it to me or one of the other staff members as soon as possible. This is a community first and foremost, and we will NOT deal with this.

    Nice...

    Just so everyone knows, the user in question was janjan. He/she sent out a round of 20 spam PMs on Thursday and was mod queued and PM restricted for 24 hours, as designated in site posting guideline 9.A. After having the restrictions lifted yesterday afternoon he/she sent out another round last night. I could see that 20 PMs were sent, but couldn't see who they went to or what the content was. That was why I started this thread.

    The user is now banned, and good riddance. I have a function that will delete all of the PMs, so some of you who received them and haven't deleted them yet will notice that they are gone. If anything like this happens again through PMs, please report it immediately so that the user can be dealt with.
